“Kia EV3: The Electric Crossover That Could Replace the Volkswagen Golf”

DESIGN & STYLING

The Kia EV3 boasts a bold and eye-catching exterior design, reminiscent of the popular Kia EV9. With its shrunken EV9-like appearance, the EV3 stands out in the electric car market. It shares the same E-GMP architecture as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, featuring MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear setup. However, it operates at 400V instead of 800V, making it more similar to the Kia Niro EV.

One of the reasons the EV3 stands out is its competitive pricing, offering buyers a great electric car without the usual price premium associated with EVs. With an overall length of 4300mm, width of 1850mm, height of 1560mm, and a wheelbase of 2680mm, the EV3 is slightly larger than a Volkswagen Golf and other electric rivals like the Volvo EX30. This size makes it suitable for city driving while still offering ample interior space.

INTERIOR

Inside the EV3, you’ll find a spacious and well-designed cabin. The low center tunnel enhances the feeling of roominess in the front, while ample legroom is available in the back. The EV3 offers several storage areas, including a 460-litre boot (almost 80 litres more than a Golf) and a 25-litre ‘frunk’ at the front for the charging cable.

The interior design features modern material choices, interesting fabrics, and ambient lighting that adds a touch of color. However, some reviewers found the climate control panel to be clunky and the haptic feedback of the ‘buttons’ to be subpar. Despite these minor drawbacks, there is no evidence of cost-cutting in the EV3, with high-quality materials used throughout the cabin.

ENGINES & PERFORMANCE

The Kia EV3 comes with a single motor powering the front wheels, delivering 201bhp and 209lb ft of torque. While dual motor versions with all-wheel drive will be available in the future, the single motor option provides impressive performance. The power delivery is well-balanced, offering more than enough power for overtaking and maneuvering through traffic.

With its compact dimensions, the EV3 excels in urban environments, providing a nimble and agile driving experience. The steering is precise, and the ride is comfortable. Visibility is partially obstructed by large pillars, but the reversing camera and blindspot monitoring system compensate for this. Overall, the EV3 offers a refined and enjoyable driving experience.

RIDE & HANDLING

The EV3 delivers a comfortable and relaxing ride, making it suitable for daily commuting and longer journeys. During testing, the EV3 displayed composed handling and well-weighted controls, providing a confident and enjoyable driving experience. The steering feel is well-judged, and the ride quality is on the softer side, reminiscent of Citroen’s comfortable suspension setups.

While European-spec cars will have a firmer suspension tune, the GT-Line with larger 19-inch wheels offers a similar driving experience to the Air trim, which features smaller 17-inch wheels. The EV3’s ride and handling make it an ideal choice for those seeking a comfortable and refined electric car.

MPG & RUNNING COSTS

One of the standout features of the EV3 is its impressive range and efficiency. The base Air trim, equipped with a 58kWh battery, offers a range of approximately 267 miles. Upgrading to the 81kWh battery option increases the range to 372 miles. These figures make the EV3 highly competitive in terms of real-world range.

The EV3’s efficiency is remarkable, achieving around 4.2 miles per kWh. This efficiency, combined with the generous standard kit levels, makes the EV3 an attractive option for cost-conscious buyers. While the EV3’s peak charging speed of 128kW is lower than some competitors, it still charges faster than the Kia Niro EV.

VERDICT

Based on early evidence, the Kia EV3 is shaping up to be one of the best electric cars on the market. It offers a compelling package with its bold styling, competitive pricing, impressive range, and efficient performance. The EV3’s comfortable ride, spacious interior, and generous standard equipment levels further enhance its appeal.

With the EV3, Kia has successfully created a feel-good car that performs well and offers a satisfying driving experience. The fact that it’s electric is secondary, as the EV3 stands on its own merits as a well-rounded and capable vehicle. With its combination of style, range, and affordability, the EV3 could be a game-changer in the electric car market.
