The successor to the Lamborghini Huracán is set to be launched in August, and it will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, replacing the traditional V10 engine. This move towards electrification is part of Lamborghini’s plan to have an all-electrified model lineup. According to Federico Foschini, Lamborghini’s head of sales and marketing, the decision to go for a plug-in hybrid powertrain is because it offers certain advantages that a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cannot provide. One of these advantages is active torque vectoring, which helps improve the car’s handling.
In terms of design, the new Huracán will bear a resemblance to the recently launched flagship V12 PHEV Lamborghini Revuelto. It will feature Lamborghini’s iconic design cues, such as the hexagonal exhaust, Y-shaped LED light designs, and prominent air channels for increased downforce. The new car will also retain the monofuselage carbon fiber monocoque introduced with the Revuelto, although it is expected to use cheaper aluminum in certain areas to keep costs down.
The platform of the new Huracán will be shortened compared to the Revuelto, giving it a more distinctive visual identity. It remains unclear whether the new car will have two motors on the front axle like the Revuelto or if it will offer rear- and four-wheel-drive variants. However, it is expected that the new V8 engine in the Huracán successor will be highly bespoke and offer a unique driving experience.
Lamborghini has partnered with Oxford-based specialist Yasa to supply slimline axial flux electric motors for the Revuelto, which helps save weight and improve power efficiency. It is likely that these motors will also be used in the new Huracán. The motors will be powered by a small, lightweight battery located in the central spine of the chassis, providing an electric-only range of fewer than 10 miles.
The ability to “torque fill” with the electric motors has led to speculation that the Huracán successor’s engine will be biased towards high revs, similar to the Revuelto’s naturally aspirated V12. This would provide a thrilling driving experience, with maximum power delivered at high RPMs.
Production of the Huracán successor will take place on the same production line as the Revuelto, as both cars share major architectural and electrical components. This marks the first time that Lamborghini will build both its supercars in series on the same line.
