The market for high-performance off-road vehicles is booming, and there’s no shortage of options for those with deep pockets. From the rugged Ford F-150 Raptor R to the prestigious Mercedes-AMG G 63, car enthusiasts have a variety of choices. However, what if you’re looking for something that combines posh attitude with exceptional off-road capabilities? Something that embodies British heritage while offering modern power? Look no further than the Land Rover Defender Octa.

The Octa is the latest addition to the iconic Defender lineup, designed to cater to individuals seeking more power than what the 518-horsepower Defender V8 offers. With a robust 626 horsepower engine, this top-trim model pushes the limits of luxury and performance while maintaining its off-road prowess. The Octa boasts subtle yet distinguished design tweaks, including diamond-shaped badges, a quad exhaust, and trendy orange running lights. Its heightened ground clearance, increased width, and revamped front and rear bumpers contribute to improved approach and departure angles.

When compared to a regular Defender, the Octa stands out with its understated elegance and purposeful upgrades. It exudes an aura of tasteful modifications that enhance its capabilities without overwhelming its original design. The mere presence of the Octa instills a desire to embark on thrilling off-road adventures. Land Rover recently presented the Octa prototypes in the “Octa Arena,” demonstrating the vehicle’s exceptional range of capabilities on muddy trails nestled within a dense woodland.

One of the standout features of the Octa is its “6D suspension,” which utilizes hydraulics to provide superior body control. This system replaces traditional anti-roll bars, allowing for greater wheel articulation in low-speed, technical off-road situations. Thanks to this technology, the Octa achieves an additional 5.5 inches of wheel articulation compared to a standard Defender. During a test ride, the Octa conquers daunting rocky terrains with ease, maintaining stability and preventing any of the four tires from leaving the ground.

To enhance its low-speed crawling capabilities, Goodyear developed bespoke 20-inch Wrangler tires specifically for the Octa. These tires feature a unique tread pattern that ensures optimal grip on challenging surfaces such as clay and muck. Switching the Octa into its high-performance mode, known as Octa mode, amplifies its capabilities further. Activating this mode unlocks an exhilarating gravel-specific launch control, propelling the Octa from 0 to 60 in a mere 3.8 seconds on asphalt.

Despite its impressive off-road performance, the Octa remains planted and solid even during encounters with rough terrains. Land Rover subjected the vehicle to over 600,000 miles of rigorous testing, leading to refinements in key components such as knuckles, wishbones, and control arms. The Octa also inherits the stiffer engine and transmission mounts from the Range Rover SV, enhancing durability and ensuring longevity under extreme conditions.

While my experience with the Octa was limited to off-road maneuvers, Land Rover emphasizes that on-road sensibility was a priority during the vehicle’s development. The director of SVO at Jaguar-Land Rover, Jamal Hameedi, emphasizes that luxury, performance, and capability are all integral aspects of the Defender’s DNA. The Octa offers buyers three different wheel and tire fitment options, with a 22-inch rim model catering to those seeking a more road-friendly experience.

Although my time in the passenger seat didn’t allow for a comprehensive assessment of the Octa’s luxury features, there’s no doubt that it pushes the boundaries of performance and capability for the Defender range. However, determining its level of luxury will require a hands-on driving experience. With a starting price of $153,475 for the Octa Edition One, almost three times the cost of a base Defender 110, it’s difficult to assign a definitive value to this top-tier trim. Yet, for those who value ostentation and performance, the Octa appears poised to exceed expectations.
