Lego and McLaren Collaborate to Create Fully Drivable 1:1 Scale Model of P1 Hypercar

Lego and McLaren have joined forces to create an incredible 1:1 scale model of the renowned McLaren P1 hypercar. This unique creation, made from over 342,000 Lego Technic elements, weighs 1220kg and is fully drivable. It recently made headlines by setting a lap record at the Silverstone circuit with Formula 1 driver Lando Norris behind the wheel.

Lego has collaborated with McLaren on several occasions in the past, producing Technic models such as the Senna GTR and the MCL36 F1 racer. However, the Lego P1 is their most ambitious project to date, representing a significant milestone in the world of Lego big-build models.

The development of the Lego P1 involved a team of 23 engineers from both Lego and McLaren, who spent over 8300 hours bringing this project to life. It required 393 types of Technic elements, including 11 bespoke parts specifically made for the car. The attention to detail is remarkable, with features like a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, suspension, V8 piston engine, and dihedral doors faithfully replicated from the original hypercar.

To power the Lego P1, Technic batteries and an electric car battery are used, providing energy to eight motor packs. Each motor pack consists of 96 Lego Power function motors, totaling 768 Lego motors. This impressive setup allows the Lego P1 to reach speeds of up to 40mph.

One of the biggest challenges faced during the development of the Lego P1 was creating a rigid structure using layers of Lego Technic elements while also accommodating the conventional steering and suspension. The compact nature of the P1 made it even more challenging. Lubor Zelinka, Lego’s design manager, explained that months of hands-on testing and building were required to achieve the final design.

To test the durability of their creation, Lego enlisted the help of F1 star Lando Norris to take the Lego P1 for a spin at the Silverstone circuit. The successful lap showcased the authenticity and quality of the Lego model, with Norris praising McLaren’s expertise in helping create a model that closely resembles the original hypercar.
