Life with a C4 X: Month 5 – The Practicality and Quirks of the Citroën C4 X

Life with a C4 X: Month 5

Practicality and Storage

The Citroën C4 X has proven to be a practical and versatile companion in month 5 of our test. Despite its sleek design, the sloped rear window hasn’t caused any issues, and the commodious boot provides ample space for various needs. With 510 litres of space, equivalent to the e-C4 X, the boot has comfortably accommodated footballs, suitcases, and weekly food shops. Additionally, there is plenty of storage space throughout the car, with sizeable door bins and a hidden compartment beneath the wireless phone charger. However, be careful not to lose anything in the hidden compartment, as it can effectively camouflage small items like keys or gum.

Minor Quibbles with Boot Space

While the boot offers generous storage, there are a few minor quibbles to note. The bootlid hinges are solidly connected to the inside of the boot, requiring careful arrangement of items to prevent obstruction when closing. Forgetting this detail initially led to some inconvenience. Furthermore, the narrow boot entry and high loading lip make it challenging to load heavier items. As a result, some users may prefer to utilize the back seats for loading gear, although this compromises security and privacy.

Comfort and Relaxation

One of the standout features of the C4 X is its exceptional comfort and relaxation. After testing other cars, returning to the C4 X is always a pleasant experience thanks to its plush and peaceful interior. The seats provide a luxurious feel, and road and wind noise are effectively insulated, creating a serene driving environment.

Petrol vs. Electric Comparison

Having previously tested the electric version of the C4 X, it’s interesting to compare its performance and features with the petrol variant. While both cars offer comfort and practicality, there are noticeable differences. The petrol version features a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo engine, which provides a different driving experience compared to the silent and composed electric powertrain of the EV. The petrol engine produces a distinctive engine noise, which some may find appealing, but it can be loud and artificial. The automatic gearbox of the petrol C4 X is also criticized for being slow to react off the line. However, on longer drives, the petrol variant proves to be efficient and achieves over 50mpg. It offers a range of 475 miles on a full tank, providing reassurance for long-distance travel.

Conclusion

Overall, the C4 X has been a versatile and accommodating companion. Its practicality and storage options make it suitable for various needs, from family holidays to house moves. The car’s comfort and relaxation are among its best qualities, offering a serene driving experience. While the petrol version may not match the electric variant’s quietness and instant torque, it compensates with efficiency and a longer range. The C4 X is a compelling option for those seeking a spacious and comfortable car.
