“Life with a Peugeot e-208: Month 1 – Exploring the Transformative iCockpit and Assessing the Future of Electric Hatchbacks”

Month 1 – Specs

Welcoming the e-208 to the fleet
French carmakers have always been known for their unique and innovative designs. From the iconic Citroen DS with its half-covered wheels to the quirky Renault Avantime MPV, they have constantly pushed the boundaries of what a car should look like. Peugeot, in particular, has made its mark with the iCockpit, a revolutionary feature that positions the instrumentation above a smaller steering wheel for better maneuverability and increased focus on the road.

The Peugeot e-208, which I have recently received, features the second generation of the iCockpit. This is a significant aspect of the car as it defines the way you interact with it. The iCockpit has been a part of all new Peugeot models since its launch in 2013, and I have been eagerly waiting to experience it firsthand.

Having previously owned a Peugeot 208 with the smaller wheel, I was excited to see how the new generation would compare. The new iCockpit, introduced in 2016 and upgraded in 2022, is a departure from the original design. Gone are the manual dials and round steering wheel, replaced by a customizable digital instrument cluster and a wheel with a flat top and bottom.

Upon my initial impressions, I have mixed feelings about the new iCockpit. It is undoubtedly a slick and modern piece of technology, but I have concerns about being able to adopt my preferred driving position with a low seat and raised wheel. Currently, the speedometer is partially obscured by the steering wheel, which is frustrating. Unlike the e-308, the screen is not as customizable, limiting the ability to move the speedometer higher on the screen. Lowering the wheel to improve visibility poses problems with leg movement and pedal use. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with some adjustments.

Beyond the iCockpit, the Peugeot e-208 boasts a stunning exterior. The updated second-generation model features a more imposing face with new tri-fang daytime-running lights and a broader front grille. Our car is adorned with the Agueda Yellow exterior, which has sparked some debate among colleagues and friends, but I personally love it.

In terms of specifications, we have opted for the GT trim, which includes a new 10-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone support, all-round sensors, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 3D instrument panel, and ‘dynamic’ front seats. Underneath, we have the largest 54kWh (51kWh usable capacity) battery, providing a WLTP range of around 250 miles. It can be charged from 20-80% in less than 25 minutes using a 100kW charger. Power is delivered by a front-mounted 154bhp motor, which is the same setup found in the new 308 and other Stellantis stablemates.

Goals for the Journey
During our time with the Peugeot e-208, we have several goals in mind. Firstly, we want to understand why this French supermini was Europe’s best-selling car in the past and remains a popular choice today. Despite a 6% year-on-year drop in sales, it still holds a strong position in the market.

Secondly, we aim to explore the future of small hatches, especially those equipped with electric powertrains. In April, demand for superminis, including the 208, Renault Clio, and Volkswagen Golf, contributed to a 12% increase in new car sales across Europe, surpassing the popularity of SUVs. We want to determine if small hatches like the e-208 can sustain this momentum.

Additionally, we will test the claimed range of the e-208 during long-haul motorway driving. With the growing popularity of electric vehicles, range anxiety remains a concern for many potential buyers. We will assess if the e-208’s range is achievable and if the lower mileage it offers can be lived with.

Lastly, we will evaluate the performance of the iCockpit. Some colleagues have expressed doubts about its usability, and we will address this concern head-on. The iCockpit is a defining feature of the e-208, and it is crucial to determine if it lives up to its predecessor’s success.

Conclusion
As I spend more time with the Peugeot e-208, I am already developing a connection with the car. The unique design and advanced technology have certainly piqued my interest. Over the coming months, I look forward to uncovering the true potential of this little electric hatchback and sharing my experiences.
