Life with an MG 4 EV: Month 1 – Exploring the Extended Range and Powerful Motor

Life with an MG 4: Month 1

Welcoming the MG to the Fleet

The MG 4 has been a hit in the market, appealing to a wide range of buyers. Its affordability, driving experience, and practicality have made it a popular choice among private buyers, not just business buyers looking for EV tax benefits. So, when the opportunity arose to test the new Extended Range version of the MG 4, I was eager to see what it had to offer.

Impressive Specs

The Extended Range model boasts a 20% increase in battery range, offering a claimed 323 miles of cruising. This was a significant improvement for me, as I believed that an EV’s range should start with a ‘3’ to meet my lifestyle needs. Additionally, the new-spec 241bhp motor shaved off a second from the 0-62mph time, making it a seriously brisk performer.

First Impressions

The MG 4 I received was a full-house Trophy-spec version in Camden Grey, a color that may not appeal to car enthusiasts. However, the overall body and paint quality were impressive, with no noticeable signs of wear or damage. The interior trim materials, while not the highest quality, held up well despite the car’s previous use by other testers.

Features and Gadgets

The Trophy equipment level, standard in the Extended Range model, came with a range of gadgets and features. The sat-nav was quick-acting, the hi-fi system was of good quality, and the rear camera provided crystal-clear visibility. The heated steering wheel was a nice touch, especially during colder months. While some of the electronic driver aids were tolerable, the lane-keeping assistance system was less than ideal and needed to be turned off before driving.

Affordability and Value

The MG 4 Extended Range Trophy comes with a price tag of £36,495, the same as the shorter-range XPower model. Both models are a significant £10,000 more than the entry-level car, but in my opinion, the additional range is worth the extra cost. While the top-spec MG 4 may not be considered a bargain compared to similar ICE models, it is still affordable, especially for those opting for PCP financing.

Driving Experience

The driving experience of the MG 4 was a pleasant surprise. Despite its 1750kg weight, it felt agile and easy to maneuver. The rear-wheel drive, near 50:50 weight distribution, and nicely weighted steering contributed to its balanced handling. Unlike some EVs, there was no feeling of the car’s mass overpowering the tires. The only minor complaint was that the brakes felt overly light, but it was something I could easily get used to.

Impressive Range

One of the standout features of the MG 4 Extended Range was its impressive range. The fascia predictor promised a maximum range of 360 miles, well above the WLTP figure. In reality, I consistently achieved around 330-340 miles on a single charge, a significant increase compared to my previous experiences with EVs. This newfound range gave me confidence on long journeys, knowing that I could recharge at familiar public places if needed.

Choosing the MG 4

Despite owning other cars, I found myself choosing the MG 4 for journeys, not just for its money-saving benefits but for the sheer enjoyment it provided. The comfort, quietness, steering, and power delivery all contributed to a satisfying driving experience. While the MG 4 may not have a direct relationship with the MGs of old, there were moments where I felt a connection to the brand’s heritage.

Second Opinion

Another reviewer who previously tested the MG 4 Extended Range in winter had mixed experiences. The extended range did not fully materialize in cold weather, and the ride and handling felt slightly clumsy compared to the Long Range model. However, the reviewer is curious to see how the car performs in a longer-term test.

Conclusion

The MG 4 Extended Range impressed with its increased battery range, powerful motor, and enjoyable driving experience. The car’s affordability, practicality, and appeal to private buyers make it a strong contender in the EV market. With its improved range and overall performance, the MG 4 is a viable option for those looking to switch to electric mobility without compromising on quality or driving enjoyment.
