Life with an MG 4: Month 1 – A Closer Look at the Extended Range EV with 241bhp Motor

Life with an MG 4: Month 1

Welcoming the MG to the Fleet

The MG 4 has been a hit in the market for its affordability, performance, and practicality. It appeals to both private buyers and business buyers, who are attracted to its qualities beyond just the cost-saving benefits of an electric vehicle (EV). So, when the opportunity arose to test out the new Extended Range version of the MG 4, I eagerly took it.

Impressive Specs and Design

The Extended Range model boasts a 20% increase in battery range, promising a cruising range of 323 miles. Additionally, it features a new-spec 241bhp motor, shaving off a second from the 0-62mph time. The car I received was a full-house Trophy-spec version, which came in a non-descript Camden Grey color. Despite the average quality of the interior materials, the car showed no signs of wear and tear, aside from a minor mark on the driver’s seat. The body and paint were in good condition, meeting high manufacturing standards.

Impressive Features and Gadgets

The Trophy equipment level, standard with the Extended Range model, is loaded with impressive features and gadgets. From a quick-acting sat-nav and quality hi-fi system to the world’s clearest rear camera and a heated steering wheel, the car offers a comfortable and convenient driving experience. It also includes a variety of electronic driver aids, although the lane-keeping assistance system can be overpowering and needs to be turned off.

Affordability and Value

While MGs are often touted as bargains, the Extended Range Trophy model comes with a price tag of £36,495, the same as the even faster XPower model with a shorter range. However, the additional range is worth the extra cost, especially for those who prioritize range over speed. Despite being more expensive than the entry-level model, the top-spec MGs are still affordable, particularly for PCP customers.

Impressive Performance and Handling

From the moment I started driving the MG 4, I was impressed. Despite its 1750kg weight, the car feels agile and easy to handle. With rear-wheel drive, near 50:50 weight distribution, and nicely weighted steering, it offers a balanced and enjoyable driving experience. Unlike some EVs, there is no sense of the car’s mass overpowering the tires. The only minor complaint is that the brakes feel overly light. Even the ride quality is generally good, although there can be some pitching on uneven surfaces.

Extended Range and Confidence

One of the standout features of the MG 4 Extended Range is its improved battery range. With the fascia predictor indicating a range of up to 360 miles, it exceeds the WLTP figure. In reality, the car consistently delivers around 330-340 miles, which is a significant change for me. This increased range has given me the confidence to take longer journeys and rely on public charging points, although most of the time, I can make it home without needing to recharge. The car’s efficiency, averaging around 4.1 miles per kWh, also means I don’t always need to search for a charging station.

A Deep Satisfaction in Driving

Beyond the practicalities, what makes the MG 4 truly enjoyable is the driving experience. It offers a level of comfort, quietness, responsive steering, and power delivery that leaves me choosing it over other cars, not just for financial reasons but for the sheer fun of it. While the MG 4 may not have a direct connection to the MGs of the past, there are moments where I feel a sense of nostalgia and connection.

Second Opinion

Another reviewer noted that the Extended Range MG 4 didn’t perform as well in winter conditions, with reduced efficiency and slightly clumsier ride and handling compared to the Long Range version. However, with a longer-term test, they are curious to see how it will perform in various conditions.

In conclusion, the MG 4 Extended Range offers an affordable and practical electric vehicle option with impressive performance, range, and features. It provides a satisfying driving experience that goes beyond just the cost-saving benefits of an EV. With its extended battery range and improved motor, it offers both practicality and enjoyment on the road.
