Linktree Surpasses 50 Million Users, Launches Social Commerce Offering

Linktree, the popular link-in-bio startup, has announced that it now has over 50 million users, a significant increase from the 2.7 million users it had in 2019. The company has been experiencing consistent growth, adding nearly 10 million users in just five months. In December, it reported having 41 million users, and by March, that number had risen to over 47 million.

Compared to its competitors, Linktree stands out as one of the top link-in-bio tools on the market. Rivals like Later and Beacons have significantly smaller user bases, with Later having around 7 million users and Beacons having over 2 million.

Linktree’s success can be attributed to its focus on its users, or as they call them, “Linkers.” Co-founder and CEO Alex Zaccaria described it as empowering more than 50 million Linkers with a space they own to grow and monetize.

In addition to its impressive user growth, Linktree is also launching the beta version of its social commerce offering. This new program allows creators to add storefronts to their link-in-bio pages and take a commission on sales. Initially available to a few creators and brands such as Revolve, Sephora, and Urban Outfitters, Linktree has now opened it up to more users and added over 2,000 brands to the program. This includes popular names like Adidas, Lululemon, New Balance, and Net-a-Porter. Creators can now access a vast product catalog and showcase thousands of items on their storefronts. Moreover, users can now upload user-generated content to promote relevant content from their social media accounts alongside recommended products.

This new social commerce offering from Linktree is expected to be beneficial for influencers, as it allows them to effectively monetize their audience. The global market for social commerce is predicted to reach $1.2 trillion by 2025, according to Accenture. Lara Cohen, Linktree’s Vice President of Brand Development, explained that the program aims to enhance organic social commerce activity on the platform. Linkers are estimated to drive over $6 billion in annual gross merchandise value via their Linktrees. By reducing friction and simplifying the purchase process, customers can discover and buy products directly from Linktrees.

Linktree has experienced significant success in terms of commerce sales, with over 240 million commerce clicks from links in the past month, which translates to approximately $300 million in monthly sales.

Linktree’s widespread adoption spans from part-time content creators to high-profile celebrities like Demi Lovato, Paris Hilton, and Robert Downey Jr. Even The White House uses Linktree to direct U.S. citizens to online resources.

To further expand its services and revenue streams, Linktree has made strategic investments, acquiring two smaller startups in the link-in-bio space, Koji and Bento. However, the company has not disclosed its plans for these platforms.

While Linktree has achieved remarkable success, it hasn’t been without challenges. In June 2023, the company laid off 27% of its workforce in Australia and New Zealand. These layoffs were part of a strategic shift to focus on growth in the U.S., its largest market. This followed a previous round of job cuts in 2022, where 17% of staff were let go.

Despite these hurdles, Linktree has raised over $165 million in funding and is currently valued at over $1 billion. With its growing user base, expansion into social commerce, and strategic acquisitions, Linktree is poised to continue its impressive growth trajectory.
