In a significant advancement for the electric vehicle market in the UK, Maxus, the sibling brand of MG, has unveiled the eTerron 9, the country’s first four-wheel-drive electric pick-up truck. This groundbreaking model not only signifies a shift towards sustainable transport but also demonstrates the growing versatility and capability of electric vehicles in traditionally rugged sectors like pickup trucks.

The eTerron 9 represents a notable evolution from its predecessor, the Maxus T90EV, which was the UK’s first electric pick-up but was limited to rear-wheel drive. With its four-wheel-drive system, the eTerron 9 is designed to tackle various terrains, enhancing its appeal to both consumers and commercial users who require a robust vehicle for diverse applications.

Dimensions play a crucial role in the utility of any pick-up truck, and the eTerron 9 does not disappoint. Slightly larger than the popular Ford Ranger, the eTerron 9 is engineered for maximum load space, featuring a rear bed that measures an impressive 2.4 meters. This increase in size not only enhances cargo capacity but also incorporates functional elements like a drop-down rear bulkhead, allowing for the transport of exceptionally long items. Additionally, a 236-liter compartment under the bonnet offers a practical solution for storing smaller items, indicating a thoughtful design aimed at user convenience.

However, the eTerron 9’s payload capacity of 620 kg does raise some concerns, particularly when compared to competitors like the Ranger and Toyota Hilux, which benefit from a payload threshold that qualifies for lower commercial vehicle tax rates. This limitation could impact its attractiveness to businesses that prioritize maximum utility in their fleet operations.

On the towing front, the eTerron 9 boasts a competitive capacity of 3500 kg, making it suitable for hauling trailers and other heavy loads, which is a vital consideration for many pick-up truck buyers. This feature aligns with the increasing demand for electric vehicles capable of performing traditional truck duties without sacrificing the environmental benefits of electric power.

At the heart of the eTerron 9 is a robust 102 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which provides an impressive range of up to 267 miles. This range addresses one of the most pressing concerns for potential electric vehicle buyers: range anxiety. The vehicle’s ability to charge at rates up to 115 kW allows for a swift 20-80% charge in approximately 40 minutes, making it practical for both daily use and longer journeys. Furthermore, the vehicle-to-load functionality adds a layer of versatility, enabling users to power external devices, which could be particularly useful for those working in remote locations.

The eTerron 9 is equipped with two permanent magnet synchronous motors, one for each axle, delivering a combined output of 435 bhp. This configuration not only enhances traction but also optimizes performance in various driving conditions. The advanced air suspension system is another highlight; it automatically adjusts the ride height based on speed, which not only improves aerodynamics and range on highways but also lowers the cargo bay by 60 mm when stationary for easier loading and unloading.

Maxus plans to open customer orders for the eTerron 9 in October, with deliveries expected to commence by January 2025. Though pricing details are yet to be disclosed, industry expectations suggest it will be positioned above the T90EV, which starts at £49,950 before VAT. This strategic pricing will be crucial in determining the eTerron 9’s market reception, particularly against established competitors.

As consumer preferences shift towards sustainability, the demand for electric alternatives that do not compromise on utility is expected to grow.
