“Meet the Modernized Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evo II: A Legendary Racer Reimagined”

The HWA Evo: A Modernized Version of a Classic Sedan

In the late 1980s, Mercedes-Benz created the 190 E 2.5-16 Evo, a powerful sedan built for the German Touring Car series. This car marked Mercedes’ return to factory motor racing after a long hiatus. However, despite their efforts, Mercedes drivers were unable to secure a victory in the DTM. Determined to succeed, Mercedes introduced the 190 E 2.5-16 Evo II in 1990 and 1991. This second iteration proved to be a game-changer, with driver Klaus Ludwig winning both the DTM Driver’s Championship and the manufacturer’s championship in 1992.

These roadgoing versions of the Evo II became highly sought-after collector’s items, with average sales prices reaching around $300,000. Recognizing the enduring appeal of this iconic vehicle, German outfit HWA decided to create a modernized version of the Evo II using a standard Mercedes 190 E chassis. HWA, which stands for Hans-Werner Aufrecht, is known for its work with Mercedes and was involved in the development of the original Evo models.

While some might consider the HWA Evo as a restomod, it is more accurately described as a current imagining of what an Evo III might look like. The only original parts from the 190 E shell that remain are the cant rails and C-pillar. Everything else has been modified or upgraded with modern components.

Under the hood, the HWA Evo is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine sourced from Mercedes. HWA installs a dry sump system and balances the rotating assembly for optimal performance. The standard version produces 444 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, while an optional Affalterbach Package raises the output to 493 horsepower. The car is targeted to weigh around 3,220 pounds, allowing for excellent acceleration and a top speed of 168 miles per hour. With the Affalterbach Package, the top speed increases to an impressive 189 mph.

HWA faced a challenge when deciding on the engine for the Evo III. While they initially considered a four-cylinder engine in line with the original, customers expressed a desire for something more special. A V8 was out of the question due to space constraints, so HWA settled on the powerful V6 configuration.

To ensure the car’s structural integrity and safety, HWA stripped and reinforced the body shell with aluminum and high-strength steel. The front and rear axles were moved to achieve a 50:50 weight balance, resulting in improved handling. Thinner and lighter glass from the Evo II was also sourced for the HWA Evo. Additionally, carbon fiber body panels were bonded to the shell, resulting in a nine-inch increase in width compared to the Evo II.

The HWA Evo features a race-spec multi-link suspension with KW shocks that offer manual adjustment or electronic controls, depending on the variant. Braking power is provided by six-piston front brakes with 15-inch rotors and four-piston calipers with 14-inch rotors at the rear. The car rides on 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels.

Inside the cabin, front passengers are treated to Recaro seats and digital gauges that mimic the original displays, blending classic design elements with modern technology.

HWA has completed one car so far, which is currently undergoing a year-long testing and development phase. Once this phase is complete, HWA plans to produce one car per week, with a total of 100 units planned. Already, 75 of these units have been sold at a price of €714,000 ($765,000 U.S.) each. Looking to the future, there are rumors of HWA developing a modern interpretation of the iconic AMG Hammer.
