The Mercedes-AMG C-Class has been a staple in the performance car market for 25 years, thanks to its powerful V8 engine. The C43 AMG, the first V8-powered model, was a game-changer for AMG and helped establish the brand as a force to be reckoned with. However, times are changing, and Mercedes-AMG is now introducing the new four-cylinder C63 S E Performance as a replacement for the V8 C-Class.

The decision to move away from the V8 engine may have been driven by several factors. Firstly, Mercedes’ management board may have realized that a V8-powered C-Class could quickly become outdated and a liability in terms of emissions. The company is likely keen to align with stricter environmental regulations and reduce its carbon footprint. Additionally, the C-Class is a strong seller for AMG, and the numbers may not add up to keep producing V8 models in the same way.

The new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance features a modernized four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with a 201bhp electric motor, delivering a total output of 671bhp. The car also features a torque-vectoring four-wheel drive system and four-wheel steering. While the new powertrain is undoubtedly fast, it lacks the charisma and character of the old V8 engine.

The interior of the new C63 has been upgraded, with carbon fiber trim and AMG Performance seats adding a sporty atmosphere. However, the hybrid components do compromise boot space, which may be a drawback for some buyers.

On the track, the new C63 offers a different driving experience compared to its predecessor. The electric motor provides a significant boost in power when combined with the combustion engine, but it lacks the same level of excitement and engagement. The four-cylinder engine doesn’t rev as freely as a larger multi-cylinder engine, and the car’s overall performance is not as thrilling as before.

In terms of running costs, the C63 is an expensive option, with a starting price of around £97,530. The hybrid system does not offer significant benefits in terms of fuel economy, and the car’s electric range is too short to qualify for lower company car tax.

Overall, the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance is a technical achievement with impressive performance. However, it lacks the charm and charisma of its V8-powered predecessors. The decision to move towards a hybrid powertrain may be necessary to meet environmental regulations, but it comes at the cost of the car’s character. It remains to be seen if Mercedes-AMG can come up with a better send-off for its combustion engines in the future.
