Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Set to Bring V8 Power Back to AMG Lineup: Reports

Mercedes-AMG has always been known for its incredible exhaust notes, with the V8 rumble being a delight for enthusiasts. However, in recent years, as AMG started focusing on creating more well-rounded driving experiences, some enthusiasts have felt that the brand’s signature sound has taken a backseat. The introduction of a four-cylinder PHEV powertrain in the latest C 63 and E 63 models sparked controversy, as buyers expressed concerns about the increased weight and lack of excitement.

Last year, rumors began circulating that Mercedes was considering bringing back the V8 engine for the AMG C 63 and E 63 variants. However, the CEO of Mercedes-AMG quickly put those rumors to rest. Yet, it seems that a compromise has been reached in the form of the AMG CLE 63. According to Autocar, senior officials at Mercedes-Benz have confirmed that the AMG CLE 63 will indeed be equipped with a V8 engine.

Several factors seem to have influenced this decision. First and foremost, sales of the latest C 63 and E 63 models have been disappointing. Buyers have shown their reluctance to embrace the new four-cylinder powertrain, causing sales to be “well below” those of their V8 predecessors. This clear message from AMG owners worldwide has likely contributed to the change in strategy.

Furthermore, dealers have reportedly expressed concerns that customers might be confused by the fact that the less expensive CLE 53 model is equipped with a six-cylinder mild hybrid powertrain, while the higher-end CLE 63 would come with a four-cylinder engine. Although this argument may seem like a desperate attempt from dealers to secure a V8 option, Mercedes seems to take it seriously. The company believes that having a six-cylinder AMG model in the lineup justifies offering a more powerful V8 version as well.

According to Autocar, the V8 option in the AMG CLE 63 will produce 585 horsepower, which is significantly lower than the 670 horsepower of the four-cylinder PHEV powertrain. However, this power output is still substantial and would position the CLE 63 as a direct competitor to the BMW M4, which features a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 542 horsepower. Clearly, Mercedes-AMG wants to offer a comparable alternative to its competitors.

This recent development with the AMG CLE 63 also suggests that Mercedes might be reconsidering its stance on the AMG C 63 and E 63 models. At the Beijing Motor Show, Markus Schäfer, head of Mercedes-Benz’s R&D operations, hinted that the company is closely monitoring sales of the C63 and GLC 63, as there have been calls for them to return to V8 power. Schäfer stated that it will ultimately be up to customers to decide whether AMG continues with downsized petrol-electric drivetrains.

In conclusion, while the controversy surrounding the four-cylinder PHEV powertrain in the AMG C 63 and E 63 models remains, Mercedes-AMG is taking steps to address the concerns of its enthusiasts. The introduction of the V8-powered AMG CLE 63 indicates a potential shift in strategy for the brand. It remains to be seen how customers will respond and whether this will lead to a return to V8 power for the entire AMG lineup. The battle between performance and efficiency is far from over.
