Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that the upcoming CLE 63 will be equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine, generating up to 585bhp. This decision marks a departure from the initial plan to give the new coupe and cabriolet a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, similar to the C63 and GLC 63, due to slow sales of the saloon, estate, and SUV models.
The shift to the V8 engine is in response to feedback from AMG’s global dealer network and the lukewarm response to the PHEV models. Dealers expressed concerns about potential confusion among customers if a four-cylinder CLE 63 were positioned above the six-cylinder CLE 53. In order to establish the CLE as a direct competitor to the BMW M4, Mercedes has decided to provide the CLE with V8 power.
Mercedes-Benz’s head of R&D operations, Markus Schäfer, has emphasized that customer feedback will play a crucial role in determining AMG’s future direction.
