“Mercedes-AMG Commits to Internal Combustion Engines Amidst Uncertain EV Demand”

Mercedes-AMG is not putting a fixed date on the end of internal combustion engines (ICE) in its cars, stating that it will continue to produce ICE vehicles as long as legislation allows. This decision comes as demand for electric cars in Europe softens and some markets hesitate to implement a complete ban on ICE vehicles. Mercedes-AMG’s commitment to investing in ICE technology means that their renowned V8 engines may continue to be produced for the foreseeable future.

During the unveiling of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro 4Matic+, AMG boss Michael Schiebe emphasized that there is no set end date for phasing out ICE engines in AMG models. However, he also acknowledged that if current legislation banning new ICE car sales is implemented, the brand’s future will ultimately be that of an electric-only car manufacturer. Schiebe stated, “We have no end date, but that would also be a very dogmatic discussion… Our main purpose is to satisfy customer needs.”

Schiebe confirmed that AMG is actively working on their bespoke architecture for electric cars, called AMG.EA, and that he personally drives prototypes on a weekly basis. He expressed excitement about the emotional experience that an all-electric AMG car will provide and suggested that it will be available sooner rather than later. However, he also acknowledged that customer acceptance of electric technology may take time, as evidenced by the lukewarm reception of AMG’s four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Mercedes-AMG C63.

Despite the hesitancy around fully committing to electric vehicles, Schiebe emphasized that AMG is an open-minded technology brand and is willing to explore different powertrain options. He stated, “It’s important to be open-minded when it comes to technology.” When asked about the powertrain for the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63, Schiebe remained tight-lipped but assured that customers will be excited once it hits the market.

While the future of AMG may eventually be all-electric, the brand’s decision to continue producing ICE vehicles reflects the current market demand and the flexibility to adapt to changing legislation. By investing in both ICE and electric technologies, AMG aims to satisfy customer needs while also preparing for a future where electric vehicles become dominant. The lack of a fixed end date for ICE engines demonstrates AMG’s commitment to providing high-performance vehicles that cater to a wide range of customer preferences.
