Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+: A Powerful and Electric Performance Saloon with Some Compromises

The Mercedes-AMG E63, a beloved and powerful super-saloon, has been discontinued as part of Mercedes’ electrification plans. However, it has been indirectly replaced by the Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+. While the new model lacks the V8 engine of its predecessor, it still delivers impressive performance with 603bhp, matching the power of the previous-generation E63. The E53 features a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol engine and a synchronous electric motor. The combination of these power sources results in an overall output of 577bhp and 553lb ft, which can be increased to 603bhp with the AMG Dynamic Plus package. The car also offers an electric-only range of up to 63 miles on the WLTP test cycle. In terms of design, the E53 boasts a more aggressive appearance with unique styling elements. Inside, buyers can choose between different displays and seat types, and the interior is imbued with traditional AMG touches. In terms of performance, the E53 accelerates quickly and smoothly, with seamless power delivery across the rev range. The car offers precise steering and plenty of traction, thanks to its four-wheel drive system. However, its handling is affected by its substantial weight. The E53’s ability to run in pure-electric mode for significant distances adds to its appeal, especially for urban driving. Overall, the E53 delivers impressive straight-line performance and excellent electric qualities but falls short in terms of handling and driver involvement compared to the V8-powered E63. Pricing for the E53 has yet to be announced but is expected to be above £100,000 in the UK. Despite its compromises, the E53 remains an attractive option in the super-saloon segment.
