Mercedes has taken its luxury roadster, the SL, to a whole new level of performance with the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance, an 805bhp plug-in hybrid. This new model joins the existing range of SL models, which includes the SL 43 with a 416bhp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the SL 55 4Matic+ with a 469bhp twin-turbocharged V8, and the SL 63 4Matic+ with a 577bhp twin-turbocharged V8. The SL 63 S E Performance shares its powertrain with its fixed-roof sibling, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance.

The combination of a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine and an electric motor gives the SL 63 S E Performance impressive performance capabilities. It can go head-to-head with other performance plug-in hybrid models like the Bentley Continental GT and the hybrid Porsche 911. However, it falls short in terms of electric range, with only up to 8.1 miles of EV range.

In terms of design and styling, the SL 63 S E Performance doesn’t differ much from other SL models. The main difference lies in the PHEV batteries, which reduce the boot capacity by 103 litres. Despite this, the car can still accommodate luggage with its optional rear seats, whether the fabric roof is raised or lowered.

The SL 63 S E Performance offers a thrilling driving experience, with a combination of internal combustion engine power and electric motor assistance. The deep and unfiltered exhaust note adds to the driving appeal, particularly with the roof down. The new drivetrain brings an additional 228bhp and 457lb ft of torque compared to the previous range-topping SL 63 4Matic+. However, the extra weight of the hybrid system doesn’t hinder the car’s performance. It strikes a balance between being a sun-seeking roadster and a rapid grand tourer.

While the SL 63 S E Performance isn’t as precise or focused as its coupe sibling, it is still one of the fastest roadsters available, with impressive acceleration times. The ride and handling are slightly more comfort-oriented compared to the sharper GT 63 S E Performance. Wind buffeting within the cabin is well controlled, but considering the car’s top speed of 197mph, it needs to be able to withstand high winds.

In terms of running costs, the SL 63 S E Performance has a 4.8kWh lithium-ion battery that provides an electric range of up to 8.1 miles. While this range may seem limited, it’s important to remember that this car is designed for performance rather than long electric drives.

Overall, the SL 63 S E Performance offers remarkable performance and the ability to drive in pure electric mode. However, it lacks some of the precision and engagement found in its coupe sibling. It may not be as practical as other SL models, but it represents the cutting edge of drivetrain technology. While it may not be the ideal choice for track-day driving, it offers an enticing option for those looking for a high-performance luxury roadster.
