Mercedes-Benz Extends Life Cycles of Plug-In Hybrid Models with Increased Battery Capacities and Range

Mercedes-Benz has reportedly decided to extend the life cycles of its plug-in hybrid models, including the A-Class, B-Class, and CLA, after experiencing slower-than-expected sales of its electric vehicles (EVs). This decision comes as a change in planning for the German automaker, which had initially planned to discontinue these compact models to make room for its new lineup of EVs in 2025. However, ailing EV sales have prompted Mercedes-Benz to give these models a renewed lease of life.

According to sources, the extended life cycles of these models will come with increased battery capacities and a higher electric-only range. From September onwards, all compact Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrid models will receive a 13kWh battery, replacing the current 11.6kWh battery. This upgrade is expected to extend the electric range of the A250e hatchback beyond 60 miles, with other models also benefiting from an increase in electric range by around six miles. These changes are in line with Germany’s car leasing law, which now requires plug-in hybrids to have an electric range of at least 48 miles or a CO2 emission figure below 50g/km to achieve certain tax thresholds.

In addition to the plug-in hybrid models, Mercedes-Benz also plans to increase the battery capacity of its electric-powered models, the EQA 350 4Matic and EQB 350 4Matic. These models will receive a larger 70.5kWh battery instead of the current 66.5kWh one. The upgraded battery is expected to increase the WLTP range of the EQA 350 4Matic from 285 to 296 miles and the EQB 350 4Matic from 277 to 289 miles. This larger-capacity battery is already offered as standard equipment in the North American-market EQB 350 4Matic.

These changes from Mercedes-Benz reflect the evolving market demand and the need to meet stricter regulations. The decision to extend the life cycles of the plug-in hybrid models shows that the company is adapting its plans based on actual sales performance and customer preferences. By increasing battery capacities and electric ranges, Mercedes-Benz aims to provide customers with more attractive options and comply with the changing regulations in Germany.
