“Mercedes-Benz Plans to Boost Range of Electric G-Class with New Battery Chemistry”

Mercedes-Benz is set to revolutionize the range of its electric G-Class with a breakthrough in battery technology. The company has partnered with American firm Sila Nanotechnologies to develop a new silicon-anode battery, which is expected to be available as an option for the G580 EQ from 2026 onwards. This new battery chemistry will significantly boost the range of the electric 4×4, offering a 20-40% increase in energy density compared to the current lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt cells.

The G580 EQ, unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show, comes with a 116kWh battery and an official range of 292 miles. However, Mercedes has confirmed plans to upgrade the model with its most energy-dense battery to date. The new silicon-anode battery could increase the capacity to 139kWh or even 162kWh, potentially pushing the range beyond 400 miles.

Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ chief technology officer, described the high energy density of the silicon-anode battery as a “game-changer” that allows the company to explore new possibilities in future electric car development. Mercedes has been working closely with Sila Nanotechnologies since 2019 to bring this technology to large-scale production.

The G580 with EQ Technology represents a shift in Mercedes’ naming strategy for its electric vehicles. The company aims to emphasize that it is part of the main G-Class range, rather than being a separate electric sub-brand. This new approach will be extended to other Mercedes EVs, including the EQE and EQS saloons and SUVs.

In terms of design, the G580 is virtually identical to the recently updated G450d, with subtle modifications to signify its electric powertrain. Mercedes has also optimized aerodynamic efficiency by introducing a new A-pillar design and a spoiler lip on the front of the roof. The G580 features four electric motors, one for each wheel, with a combined output of 579bhp and 859lb ft of torque.

The G580 is designed to deliver exceptional off-road performance, meeting or exceeding the capabilities of its petrol-powered counterpart. It features a shiftable low-range transmission, virtual differential locks, and a fording depth of 850mm. The electric powertrain elements are all sealed, allowing the G580 to tackle challenging off-road terrains. The only area where it falls slightly short is ground clearance due to the flat floor design.

To enhance off-road driving, the G580 offers three bespoke functions: G-Turn, G-Steering, and an off-road crawler function. It also features a “transparent bonnet” function that projects a forward view onto the infotainment screen to aid obstacle navigation.

The G580 is built on a modified version of the G-Class’s ladder frame chassis, with the batteries integrated into the frame as structural components. The 116kWh battery can be fast-charged at speeds of up to 200kW and provides a claimed range of 292 miles. Mercedes has conducted extensive tests to demonstrate the G580’s off-road capabilities, including completing the Schöckl mountain pass ascent and descent 14 times on a single charge.

While UK pricing and on-sale dates for the G580 with EQ Technology have not been announced yet, it is expected to sit between the G450d and the range-topping Mercedes-AMG G63. Mercedes plans to introduce this new naming strategy to its future electric vehicles, with models like the electric CLA retaining their original titles.
