Mercedes Unveils the CLE Class: A Blend of Luxury and Performance in a Coupe

Mercedes is taking a unique approach to car production by merging the best features of its C-Class and E-Class coupes and convertibles into one model, the CLE Class. This new model combines the familiarity of its predecessors with a sleek design and powerful performance. The CLE is larger than the E-Class Coupe, with a wider body and lower height, giving it an athletic and luxurious appearance. The interior features Mercedes’ Multicountour seats in red leather and a familiar dashboard setup with a pair of screens for infotainment and driver display.

The second row of seating in the CLE can be accessed easily, but lacks headroom compared to the cars it replaces. However, it provides enough space for comfortable seating, making it suitable for passengers of all ages. The CLE comes with two engine options, with the CLE 450 featuring a mild-hybrid, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid system eliminates turbo lag, providing a seamless and linear acceleration experience. The nine-speed automatic transmission transitions smoothly between gears, although manual mode could use more responsiveness.

A notable feature of the CLE 450 is the piped-in “Progressive Sport Sound” developed by AMG, which enhances the engine note with a rumble while driving. The CLE 450 also offers a standard “sport” suspension that provides a smooth and comfortable ride. Precise steering and good handling contribute to the overall driving experience, making it easy to control the car even at higher speeds. The Multicontour seats come with a massage function, adding an extra level of comfort during long drives.

The CLE’s infotainment system features the latest MBUX operating system, with an 11.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. The system incorporates the “zero-layer” technology found in Mercedes’ electric EQ cars, making it easier to navigate through menus. The CLE 450 includes a “Routines” feature that allows users to set conditions to trigger specific vehicle functions, such as turning on the ventilated seats or tuning to a favorite radio station at a specific time.

In terms of practicality, the CLE Coupe is suitable for everyday use. Getting in and out of the car is easy for the driver, although accessing the back seats requires some arm strength. The trunk offers enough space to carry groceries or other items, making it versatile for various errands.

The CLE Coupe starts at $57,650 for the base model, while the CLE 450 has a starting price of $66,800. The tested CLE 450 had several optional features that increased its price to $77,700. The Pinnacle Trim package, which adds advanced headlights, augmented video navigation, an AMG head-up display, and Dolby Atmos audio, was not included in the tested model. For those seeking more performance, there will also be a Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe with 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque.

Overall, the Mercedes CLE 450 offers a balance of luxury and athleticism with its sleek design, powerful engine, comfortable interior, and advanced features. It is a compelling option for drivers who prioritize both style and performance in their coupe.
