Meta Suspends Deployment of AI Models in Europe Amid Privacy Concerns
Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, has announced that it will not be deploying its Meta AI models in Europe for the time being. This decision comes in response to a request from the Irish privacy regulator to delay the implementation of its plan to gather data from users of Facebook and Instagram. The request was made following complaints against the company and a call to action from the advocacy group NOYB in multiple European countries.
One of the main concerns raised by regulators and privacy advocates is Meta’s plan to use personal data to train its AI models without seeking proper authorization. Despite Meta’s assurance that it will only utilize licensed and publicly available content, questions are being raised about the company’s approach. The Irish privacy regulator specifically requested that Meta cease training its large language models (LLMs) with public content from adult users of Facebook and Instagram.
Meta expressed disappointment with the Irish Data Protection Commission’s request, calling it a step backward for European innovation and competition in AI development. However, it has decided to suspend operations in Europe, a move that has been praised by the regulatory agency. This decision will also allow Meta to address inquiries from the United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner’s Office regarding the protections in place for user information.
The Information Commissioner’s Office has stated that it will continue to monitor Meta and other developers of generative AI to ensure that user rights are protected. The chair of NOYB, Max Schrems, attributed the temporary suspension to concerns raised by the group. However, it should be noted that there have been no formal changes to Meta’s privacy policy at this time.
