MG Cyberster: A Game-Changing Electric Sports Car

MG, known for its production of sports cars since 1924, is making a significant comeback with the launch of the MG Cyberster. This all-new electric sports car marks a departure from MG’s recent focus on budget-conscious family cars and brings back the brand’s sportiness. What sets the Cyberster apart is its affordability, making it accessible to ordinary enthusiasts.

The idea for the Cyberster originated in 2017 when a group of designers at the SAIC studio in London sketched a modern vision of the iconic MG B. This passion project faced multiple challenges during its development, including the disruptions caused by the pandemic. However, when SAIC chairman Chen Hong witnessed the enthusiastic reaction to the concept at the 2021 Shanghai motor show, he gave it the green light for production. This decision shows that the public’s voice does matter.

Design & Styling: A Modern Supercar with Classic Sports Car Proportions

The Cyberster’s design, created by Carl Gotham, successfully combines classic sports car proportions with modern supercar styling. Despite being longer than the Mazda MX-5, it avoids the awkward side profile typical of many EVs. This is achieved through SAIC’s “ultra-thin” battery cell design and an extra-long wheelbase to prevent long overhangs. The Cyberster convincingly resembles a modern supercar, with powered scissor doors and rear-end black masks that mimic air tunnels.

The engineers at MG made significant contributions to the Cyberster’s development in the UK. They fine-tuned various aspects such as ride, handling, steering, powertrain, and refinement. Their attention to detail ensures that the Cyberster delivers a comfortable and supportive driving experience.

Engines & Performance: Powerful and Responsive

The Cyberster offers two variants: the Trophy and the GT. The Trophy features a rear-mounted electric motor producing 335bhp and 350lb ft, comparable to the Porsche 718 Boxster. The GT, priced only £5,000 more, adds a second motor at the front, resulting in 503bhp and 535lb ft. Both variants can deliver exhilarating acceleration and impressive four-wheel-drive performance.

Ride & Handling: A Confident and Engaging Drive

The Cyberster’s ride and handling receive high praise. The suspension provides a supple and controlled ride, even on uneven roads. Body roll is minimal, and mid-corner bumps are absorbed without compromising stability. With its low weight, four-wheel drive, and excellent grip, the GT feels confidently planted. The steering offers precise accuracy, inspiring confidence in Sport mode. However, the car’s performance in other modes may be too intense for some drivers.

MPG & Running Costs: Decent Range and Charging Options

The Cyberster offers an official range exceeding 300 miles, making it suitable for long journeys. During a test drive, the efficiency was around 2.5 miles per kWh, resulting in a range of approximately 200 miles. Charging can be done at a rate of 150kW, allowing for quick top-ups. However, the availability of rapid chargers in remote areas may be limited.

The MG Cyberster is a game-changing electric sports car that brings fun back to the market while remaining affordable. It may not surpass its competitors in every aspect, but it offers a unique driving experience that combines modern technology with classic sports car appeal. This landmark vehicle proves that there is still plenty of excitement to be found in the future of sports cars.
