MG Unveils Cyber GTS Concept, a Modern Tribute to the MG B GT

MG has unveiled a new concept car, the Cyber GTS, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Cyber GTS is a four-seat coupe version of the Cyberster, and its debut marks MG’s role as the celebrated marque of the event. While the GTS is currently just a concept, MG’s top designers have stated that public reaction to the running prototype will determine whether it goes into production. The GTS is designed to be available as both a convertible and a coupe, with the coupe version closely resembling what a road-ready car would look like.

The interior of the GTS will be almost identical to that of the roadster, with the addition of a pair of rear seats that can accommodate two passengers. The roofline has been raised slightly to provide more headroom in the rear row. Despite these changes, the GTS remains structurally unchanged from the Cyberster, maintaining the same footprint, wheelbase, and proportions.

MG’s designers have not revealed a potential launch date for the GTS but have hinted at a possible release in 2025 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the MG B GT. Jozef Kaban, vice-president of MG’s parent company SAIC’s global design center and former Volkswagen designer, emphasized that the GTS is not a nostalgia-fueled project but rather a new take on the classic B GT.

Kaban highlighted the importance of finding something new and not simply copying and improving old designs. He praised MG’s ability to innovate with electric cars and stated that the GTS would offer something unique and special to a wide audience. The GTS aims to be approachable and unthreatening, focusing more on being a grand tourer than a high-performance sports coupe. Kaban described it as a car that allows drivers to enjoy their time on the road and “stop time.”

While pricing for the GTS has not been announced, it is expected to be in line with the Cyberster, which starts at £55,000. The Cyber GTS could become the first EV of its kind to go on sale, as there are currently no similarly sized and priced electric coupes available. The BMW M2, the only comparable coupe on the market, does not have an EV option in its lineup.

In conclusion, the MG Cyber GTS concept represents a modern interpretation of the classic MG B GT. Its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed showcases MG’s commitment to innovation and electric mobility. With its unique design and approachable nature, the GTS could attract a wide audience looking for a special driving experience. While it is still uncertain whether the GTS will make it to production, the concept has generated significant interest and could mark a new chapter in MG’s history.
