Microsoft Bans Police Departments from Using AI Models for Facial Recognition and Data Collection

Microsoft is taking a stronger stance against the use of its AI models for facial recognition purposes by police departments in the United States. The company’s Azure OpenAI collaboration has updated its conduct language to explicitly prohibit the use of AI model services for facial recognition by law enforcement. This includes cases where mobile cameras are used globally or where patrolling police officers use body-worn or dash-mounted cameras to verify identities. Microsoft has also disallowed the identification of individuals within a database of suspects or prior inmates.

This move by Microsoft reflects a growing concern about the potential misuse of AI technology in law enforcement.
