Microsoft Partners with Meta to Bring Windows Apps to Quest Headsets

Microsoft is taking its partnership with Meta to the next level by bringing “Windows Volumetric Apps” to Meta Quest headsets. This exciting collaboration will enable Microsoft to integrate Windows 365 and local PC connectivity into Quest headsets, allowing developers to expand their apps into the 3D space.

During the annual Build conference, Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows and Devices, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “We’re deepening our partnership with Meta to make Windows a first-class experience on Quest devices.” By leveraging Quest’s unique capabilities, Windows can now extend its apps into the immersive 3D environment.

To make this vision a reality, Microsoft is offering developers the opportunity to sign up for the developer preview and gain access to a “volumetric API.” This extension will enable users to enhance their spatial understanding without having to leave the app they are working on.

The sign-up page specifically mentions that Microsoft is seeking developers who produce or provide plug-ins for 3D Windows desktop applications or customers who work with 3D applications on Windows desktop. The company is particularly interested in those who wish to extend these applications into 3D content with mixed reality. This highlights Microsoft’s commitment to expanding the possibilities of mixed reality technology.

This isn’t the first collaboration between Microsoft and Meta. The two companies are already working together to develop a limited edition Meta Quest VR headset inspired by the Xbox. Additionally, Microsoft launched its Microsoft 365 productivity experiences, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, on the Quest in December of last year.

By combining the power of Windows with the immersive capabilities of Meta Quest headsets, Microsoft is revolutionizing the way we interact with technology. This partnership opens up new possibilities for developers and users alike, allowing them to embrace the world of mixed reality and explore the potential of 3D content in their everyday work and activities. The future of computing is becoming increasingly immersive, and Microsoft is at the forefront of this exciting transformation.
