“Mini Unveils Five-Door Version of New Cooper Hatchback, Last Combustion-Powered Car”

Mini has recently unveiled the five-door version of its new Cooper hatchback, which is the last car that the company will offer exclusively with combustion powertrains. This new model is essentially a stretched version of the three-door Cooper, offering a more conventional five-seat set-up with a rear bench instead of the four-seat interior found in the three-door. It is 160mm longer than the three-door and 31mm longer than the old five-door, providing additional rear legroom and 65 liters more boot space.

The new Mini Cooper five-door will be available in two petrol versions: the entry-level Cooper C with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-pot engine that produces 152bhp, and the Cooper S with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 201bhp. Both versions come with an automatic gearbox, as Mini has decided to drop the manual version from the line-up. However, unlike the three-door model, the larger five-door Cooper will not be offered with a battery-electric powertrain.

In terms of pricing, the new five-door starts at £24,050, which is slightly higher than the previous version. This puts it in competition with larger family hatchbacks such as the Hyundai i30, Mazda 3, and Seat Leon. The Cooper S starts at £28,450, making it more affordable compared to competitors like the Volkswagen Polo GTI. UK deliveries are set to begin in August.

The production of the five-door Mini Cooper will take place alongside the petrol-engined three-door at Mini’s Oxford plant. The plant is gradually being retooled to accommodate the production of electric Coopers and the Aceman crossover in 2026. The upcoming Mini Convertible will also be built at the Oxford plant.

This unveiling marks the last car to be presented by Mini CEO Stefanie Wurst, who will be replaced by Stefan Richmann, BMW’s corporate strategy boss. Mini enthusiasts and potential buyers can look forward to the continued renewal of the brand’s lineup, with new electric models and a focus on sustainability.

Overall, the introduction of the five-door Mini Cooper provides customers with a more spacious and practical option without sacrificing the iconic Mini design and driving experience. With its updated powertrains and automatic gearbox, Mini aims to cater to a wider range of customers who are seeking a combination of style, performance, and everyday usability. This new model further solidifies Mini’s commitment to offering a diverse and exciting lineup of vehicles for the future.
