The ElectraMeccanica Solo EVs, a peculiar three-wheeled commuter vehicle, have become the subject of intrigue and speculation due to their presence in a scrapyard just outside Gilbert, Arizona. Videos of the pile of these electric vehicles have circulated the internet, leaving many curious about why they are being destroyed. However, the truth behind their fate is quite simple: they started breaking down and couldn’t be repaired, leaving no other option but to dispose of them.
The ElectraMeccanica Solo EVs were produced from 2018 to 2023 and were initially marketed as an affordable electric vehicle solution. According to The Autopian, their appeal was significantly hindered by their high price of $18,000 and single-seat cabin. Surprisingly, these factors and the three-wheeled design were not the primary reasons for their downfall.
In August 2022, ElectraMeccanica received a customer complaint stating that their Solo had lost propulsion while driving. Similar reports followed in September, prompting the company’s engineering team to investigate and address the issue. They discovered that a defect in the motor controller, inverter, or battery controller could cause the electric motor to shut down. However, finding a solution proved elusive. As a result, ElectraMeccanica’s executive team initiated a recall in February 2023 for all 428 Solos sold to customers in the United States.
Although the company hoped to find a fix, it never materialized. In April, ElectraMeccanica notified customers that it would repurchase all affected vehicles. Subsequently, the company was acquired by electric truck company Xos, which showed no interest in repairing the Solos for resale. Instead, Xos chose to scrap them. An employee of the junkyard allegedly mentioned that the destruction of the Solos had to be supervised to confirm their disposal. This decision was likely driven by the cost-effectiveness of writing off the vehicles rather than pursuing alternative solutions.
When contacted by The Drive, Xos provided minimal information regarding the fate of the EVs. They stated that following the recall, buyback, and ElectraMeccanica’s cessation of sales, the vehicles were disposed of, partly through the facility seen in the circulating video. Furthermore, since the acquisition by Xos, ElectraMeccanica’s remaining operations have been gradually winding down.
While it is disheartening to witness the wholesale destruction of a vehicle, it is essential to recognize that the ElectraMeccanica Solo was not poised to revolutionize the automotive industry. No single electric vehicle, regardless of its radical design or visionary creator, can single-handedly change the world.
