NASCAR Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2025, Including Ricky Rudd and Carl Edwards

Ricky Rudd Receives Long-Awaited NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction

After eight years on the ballot, Ricky Rudd received the exciting news that he was finally being inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Rudd, a tough and determined driver from Virginia, was selected as part of the Class of 2025, alongside driver Carl Edwards and race strategist Ralph Moody. The official induction ceremony will take place on February 7th in Charlotte.

Rudd, known for his resilience and skill, had a successful career as a driver-owner. Over his 32-year racing career, he won 23 races and secured 29 poles. One of his notable achievements was holding the Cup Series record for consecutive starts with 788, a record later broken by Jeff Gordon in 2015. With 906 Cup races under his belt, Rudd ranked second only to Richard Petty in terms of starts. He finished in the top five in 194 races and in the top ten in 374 races. Notably, Rudd won a Cup race in 16 consecutive seasons from 1983 to 1998, showcasing his consistency and longevity.

Rudd expressed his gratitude for the Hall of Fame recognition, reflecting on his racing days and the drivers who inspired him. He admired drivers like A.J. Foyt, Richard Petty, and Bobby and Donnie Allison for their toughness and resilience. Rudd acknowledged that he sometimes pushed himself to get back into the car when others might have sat out a race or two. It was this determination and dedication that set him apart.

Joining Rudd in the Class of 2025 is Carl Edwards, an accomplished driver who made a name for himself across NASCAR’s racing series. Edwards amassed a total of 72 wins throughout his career, with 28 of them coming in the Cup Series. Known for his celebratory backflips after victories, Edwards’ success in the Truck Series catapulted him into full-time rides in both the Cup and Xfinity Series in 2005. He won his first races in each series during a weekend sweep at Atlanta Motor Speedway, becoming a rising star in the sport. Edwards also won the Xfinity Series championship in 2007 and had a remarkable 38 wins over seven full seasons at that level.

While Edwards was not present at the Hall of Fame announcement, his achievements speak for themselves. His notable victories include the Coca Cola 600 and the Southern 500 in 2015. Notably, Edwards was the Cup Series championship runner-up twice, with the closest finish in NASCAR history occurring when he lost by a tiebreaker in 2011.

Also receiving recognition is Ralph Moody, a mechanic and race strategist. Moody’s journey in NASCAR began after serving in World War II under General George S. Patton. He relocated to Florida in 1949 to pursue his passion for racing year-round. In 1957, Moody formed Holman-Moody Racing alongside John Holman, marking the start of a powerhouse NASCAR team. The team competed from 1957 to 1973 and achieved great success, winning championships with driver David Pearson in 1968 and 1969. They also secured victory in the prestigious Daytona 500 with Mario Andretti in 1967. Notable drivers who raced for Holman-Moody Racing include NASCAR Hall of Famers such as Joe Weatherly, Fred Lorenzen, Fireball Roberts, Bobby Allison, and David Pearson.

In addition to the three inductees, Dr. Dean Sicking was selected as the recipient of the Landmark Award for his contributions to the sport. Dr. Sicking played a crucial role in making racing safer after the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt at Daytona in 2001. He is credited with creating the SAFER barrier, which has saved countless lives. Dr. Sicking’s extensive research and expertise led to the implementation of safety measures at all NASCAR national series race tracks, ensuring the protection of drivers and enhancing the overall safety of the sport.

Ricky Rudd’s long overdue induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame is a testament to his remarkable career as a driver-owner. Alongside Carl Edwards and Ralph Moody, Rudd will be forever recognized for his contributions to the sport. The Class of 2025 showcases the resilience, skill, and dedication of these individuals, leaving a lasting impact on NASCAR’s rich history.
