“Netflix Reveals New Animated Films ‘Spellbound’ and ‘Pookoo’ in Collaboration with Skydance Animation”

Netflix Unveils New Animated Films “Spellbound” and “Pookoo” in Collaboration with Skydance Animation

Netflix recently showcased upcoming animated films “Spellbound” and “Pookoo,” both produced in collaboration with Skydance Animation. “Spellbound” follows the story of Ellian, a young girl kept isolated from the outside world due to her parents’ mysterious transformation into monsters. In her quest to break the spell, Ellian seeks help from the enigmatic Oracles of the Sun and Moon, who come to her aid.

Directed by Vicky Jensen, known for her work on DreamWorks’ “Shrek,” and featuring renowned composer Alan Menken, who has won an Academy Award for his work on Disney films like “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast,” “Spellbound” boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Actors Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow, and Jenifer Lewis will lend their voices to the film, set to be released on Netflix on Thanksgiving Day, November 22.

Netflix’s investment in animation content has been steadily increasing, as it proves to be a successful strategy for retaining users. This aligns with the streaming giant’s commitment to offering diverse programming that caters to a wide range of preferences. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced plans to further increase expenditure on animation material in 2024, recognizing its popularity among Netflix viewers.

The positive reception of feature films like “Leo” and “The Sea Beast” prompted Netflix to expand its animation collection. The streaming service will add new chapters to beloved franchises such as “Wallace & Gromit” and “Arcane,” based on the popular online game “League of Legends.” These additions demonstrate Netflix’s dedication to providing fresh and engaging content for its subscribers.

In addition to the animated films, Netflix also showcased its TV lineup during the preview event. Timothy Olyphant’s casting as the Terminator in the upcoming movie “Terminator Zero” garnered attention, as did the announcement of the final season of the hit series “Big Mouth.”

“Pookoo,” the second film emerging from the longstanding partnership between Skydance and Netflix, is currently in production. This buddy comedy follows the magical switch between a diminutive forest critter and a majestic bird, who embark on an extraordinary journey. The film will be directed by Nathan Greno, known for his work on Disney’s “Tangled,” alongside John Lasseter and Mary Ellen Bauder, both respected figures in the animation industry.

John Lasseter, who previously led Pixar Animation Studios and served as chief creative officer at Disney, will oversee the production of these films at Skydance Animation. Despite leaving Disney in 2018 following allegations of inappropriate behavior, Lasseter joined Skydance Animation in 2019 after a period of absence. His involvement adds a wealth of expertise and creativity to the projects.

Fans can anticipate the release of “Spellbound” on November 22, while “Pookoo” is expected to hit theaters in 2025. With its commitment to captivating storytelling and diverse animation offerings, Netflix continues to solidify its position as a leading streaming platform for audiences of all ages.
