“New Citroën C3: A Comfortable and Affordable Supermini to Challenge the Ford Fiesta”

The Ford Fiesta may no longer be in production, but its rivals are stepping up their game to become the new default choice in the supermini class. The Renault Clio, Suzuki Swift, and MG 3 have all recently launched new models to compete with the Fiesta, and now the Citroën C3 is making its bid for the crown.

The new Citroën C3 is visually identical to its electric sibling, the ë-C3, and both models share a new architecture called ‘Smart Car’ that aims to keep costs down. Despite its affordability, the C3 still manages to undercut the entry-level Renault Clio while offering generous equipment levels.

In terms of design, the new C3 is quite different from its predecessor. It has a boxy and upright shape, resembling an SUV. However, it lacks the charm and daring that one would expect from a Citroën. The plain styling is inoffensive but lacks character.

Under the hood, the Citroën C3 is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine with 99bhp. While it offers brisk initial acceleration and is nimble around town, it tends to run out of puff at higher speeds. The gearbox and clutch have greatly improved compared to previous Citroën superminis, providing a delightful driving experience.

Comfort is a key focus of the new C3, with Citroën’s Advanced Comfort package offering comfortable seats and a smooth ride. The interior features physical controls for heating and ventilation, as well as a 10.25-inch touchscreen for navigation and smartphone mirroring. The boot is spacious, but the high loading lip may be an inconvenience for some.

In terms of running costs, the new C3 offers excellent value for money. It starts at just under £18,000 and comes well-equipped with features like a head-up display and comfort seats. The fuel economy is decent, averaging just over 40mpg on a mixed road test.

While the new Citroën C3 may not be as sharp to drive as the Renault Clio, it offers a comfortable and easy-going nature that many will appreciate. It’s a strong contender in the supermini class and proves that the concept is far from doomed without the Ford Fiesta.

Overall, the Citroën C3 is a pleasing little car to drive, offering excellent value and strong equipment levels. If you were considering a Ford Fiesta, it’s worth adding the new C3 to your shortlist as well.
