Tragic Crash Raises Concerns about VinFast’s Electric SUV
On April 24, the George family was involved in a devastating single-vehicle crash in Pleasanton, California. The crash claimed the lives of Tarun, Rincy, and their two children, aged 13 and 9. Now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the incident, as there are suspicions of a steering malfunction in the VinFast VF8 SUV they were driving.
The Georges had borrowed the electric SUV from one of Tarun’s coworkers. Shortly after the crash, the owner filed a complaint with the NHTSA, detailing a prior experience where the steering wheel jerked to the right due to a perceived lane-assist feature error. This suggests that there may have been a problem with the SUV’s lane-keeping system, leading to a loss of control.
The NHTSA’s Special Crash Investigations department will be documenting the circumstances of the crash and the ensuing fire. While police are still seeking answers, it has been reported that the car hit a pole before striking a tree and catching fire. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the incident.
The NHTSA complaint filed by the owner in Pleasanton revealed that during their time with the VF8, the steering wheel automatically maneuvered in the right direction. This issue was attributed to the vehicle’s lane-keep assist being turned on by default. The complaint also provided details about the crash that is now under federal investigation.
This is not the first complaint filed against VinFast regarding steering and active safety system issues. Currently, there are 11 reports from customers regarding problems with the 2023 VF8. These complaints mainly revolve around forward collision avoidance, lane departure, and steering. Some customers have also experienced issues such as the powertrain shifting into park while driving, the vehicle driving into traffic cones, and sudden power loss at high speeds.
VinFast has faced controversy since the launch of the VF8, its first vehicle sold in North America. Negative reviews highlighting defects and a recall last year for blank displays have raised concerns about the manufacturer’s quality control. Now, regulators will have to determine whether these oversights played a role in the tragic crash.
