OpenAI Establishes Safety and Security Committee to Oversee AI Training Process

OpenAI, a startup company focused on artificial intelligence, has recently established a Safety and Security Committee to oversee its safety and security procedures. This announcement comes at a crucial time for OpenAI as the company is currently training its next AI model.

The committee will be supervised by members of the board, including CEO Sam Altman. According to a blog post by OpenAI, directors Bret Taylor, Adam D’Angelo, and Nicole Seligman will be in charge of the committee.

The need for such a committee has arisen due to concerns regarding the security of chatbots that incorporate generative AI skills. These chatbots not only have the ability to generate visuals based on text inputs but also engage in conversations similar to those of humans. OpenAI, with support from Microsoft, is involved in the development of these chatbots.

Earlier this month, Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever and Superalignment team leader Jan Leike resigned from OpenAI. CNBC reported that OpenAI disbanded the Superalignment team in May, less than a year after its establishment. Some team members were reassigned to different departments within the company due to promotion opportunities.

The newly formed Safety and Security Committee will present recommendations to the board of directors regarding safety and security choices for OpenAI’s operations and initiatives. The committee’s first task is to investigate and enhance the company’s existing safety regulations over the next ninety days. Once completed, the committee will present its ideas and suggestions to the board.

The committee includes Jakub Pachocki, recently appointed Chief Scientist, and Matt Knight, head of security. OpenAI will also seek advice from experts such as Rob Joyce, former head of cybersecurity for the US National Security Agency, and John Carlin, a former Department of Justice officer. These individuals bring extensive experience in addressing cybersecurity concerns.

OpenAI has not disclosed specific details about the new AI model it is training but has announced that it aims to bring its systems to the next level of capabilities on the path to artificial general intelligence.

In addition to the Safety and Security Committee, T-Mobile recently made headlines by announcing its acquisition of US Cellular’s wireless business for $4.4 billion. This acquisition signifies T-Mobile’s continued growth in the wireless market and further expansion of its customer base.
