In a shocking revelation, it has been uncovered that an unknown hacker gained unauthorized access to OpenAI’s internal messaging system and stole critical information regarding the design of ChatGPT. The incident, which occurred at the beginning of the previous year, has raised concerns about the potential for adversaries to exploit OpenAI’s vulnerabilities.

The suspicions surrounding this cybersecurity breach have been further heightened by reports suggesting that rival entities are showing a keen interest in OpenAI. SC Media released a report in February highlighting the growing attention from potential adversaries. According to a report published in the Financial Times, state-sponsored hacking groups from Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are actively utilizing ChatGPT for their espionage activities. This information is based on research conducted by Microsoft, upon which OpenAI relies for its operations. The revelation underscores the magnitude of the threat posed by these nations’ cyber capabilities.

The incident itself was disclosed to OpenAI employees during an open meeting held in April of that year, as reported by The New York Times. The news was shared internally with the workforce and also sent to the industry’s board of directors. However, OpenAI chose not to make this breach public due to their initial belief that the hacker was an independent individual without any known affiliations with foreign agencies.

OpenAI’s decision to keep this breach under wraps was partly influenced by their assurance that no customer or business partner data had been compromised. They were confident that sensitive information had not been acquired through inappropriate means. As a result, OpenAI did not report the incident to law enforcement agencies or regulatory bodies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Ilia Kolochenko, executive director at OpenAI ImmuniWeb, emphasized the plausibility of the incident, stating, “While the details of the alleged incident have not yet been confirmed by OpenAI, there is a strong possibility that the incident actually existed.” Kolochenko further explained that the global race for artificial intelligence has become a matter of national security, leading to aggressive cyberattacks targeting AI providers.

These attacks primarily aim to steal valuable intellectual property, including technological research, LLM models, training data sources, and commercial secrets. Kolochenko warns that more sophisticated threat actors may even implant stealthy backdoors to gain continuous control over breached AI companies, potentially disrupting or shutting down their operations at will.

These cyberattacks on AI providers mirror the large-scale hacking attempts recently observed on critical national infrastructure in Western countries. The parallels are deeply concerning, indicating a growing trend of state-sponsored cybercrime organizations and mercenaries targeting entities involved in the development and deployment of artificial intelligence.
