Porsche Taycan Lineup Sees Big Range Boost with New EPA Estimates

Porsche has recently released new EPA range estimates for its Taycan lineup, giving customers an idea of how far they can expect to travel on a single charge. While the Environmental Protection Agency has not yet published these figures, Porsche’s own testing and data suggest that the Taycan’s range has been significantly improved. These improvements are a result of several changes made to the sedan’s platform.

One of the key factors contributing to the increased range is the larger battery sizes and improved thermal management. The standard Performance pack now features an 89-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, up from 70 kWh. Additionally, the optional Performance Plus pack has been upgraded from 93 kWh to 105 kWh. These larger batteries allow for greater energy storage and provide a significant boost to the Taycan’s range.

Interestingly, the base Taycans in the lineup are the only rear-wheel drive models, with all other trims featuring all-wheel drive. The base models come standard with the 89-kWh battery, but customers can opt for the larger 105-kWh battery. On the other hand, every trim above the 4S comes equipped with the larger battery as standard.

In addition to the larger batteries, Porsche has made several other changes to improve efficiency and increase range. These include a more efficient rear motor with an upgraded inverter and new software, improved wheel aerodynamics, lower rolling resistance tires, and a more efficient heat pump. These enhancements work together to reduce energy consumption and allow for longer trips on a single charge.

Furthermore, Porsche claims that high-speed brake regeneration has increased by up to 30%. This means that more energy can be recovered and stored while braking, further extending the range of the Taycan. Notably, these range improvements have not affected the charging capabilities of the Taycan. In fact, the maximum charging rate has increased from 270 kilowatts to 320 kW, allowing for faster charging times.

Overall, these developments have led to significant improvements in the Taycan’s range. In particular, the base Taycan Performance Plus model has seen a 32% increase in range compared to previous estimates. While actual real-world testing will be necessary to confirm these figures, Porsche’s efforts to enhance the Taycan’s platform and improve its efficiency should provide customers with a more enjoyable and worry-free driving experience.
