Rebellion, the Oxford-based studio behind Sniper Elite and Zombie Army, has announced a new game called Atomfall set to release in 2025. The announcement was made at Microsoft’s Xbox showcase, and the game will be available on Xbox, PC, and Xbox Game Pass. Atomfall is a survival action game set in the English countryside after a fictionalized version of the 1957 Windscale disaster in the North of England.
In Atomfall, players will find themselves in a post-disaster world where they must navigate both human and monstrous enemies. The game features a unique blend of elements inspired by classic British sci-fi such as Day of the Triffids, Doctor Who, and The Quatermass Experiment. Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, expressed his excitement for players to uncover the mystery of Atomfall, stating that the game combines post-war Britain, Cold War paranoia, and mysterious folk horror.
The game’s setting is a picturesque British countryside that has been flipped on its head to serve as an eerie backdrop for the dark mystery. Players will need to explore a hostile world filled with bizarre characters, mysticism, cults, and murky government agencies. Their interactions with these elements will shape their story, and every encounter will be a matter of life and death.
Ben Fisher, associate head of design at Rebellion, revealed that the quarantine zone in Atomfall has been cut off from the outside world for some time, leading to a Lord of the Flies-like scenario. Players will need to scavenge to survive, investigate clues to piece together events, and navigate through a world where every decision matters.
Atomfall is an original title for Rebellion, incorporating single-player gameplay and story elements in new ways for the studio. While more details about the game are yet to be revealed, Rebellion’s track record as one of the world’s most successful independent studios and their expertise in stealth and sniping gameplay from the Sniper Elite series bode well for Atomfall’s success.
Overall, Atomfall promises to be an immersive and unique gaming experience, offering players a combination of thrilling action, mysterious storytelling, and the opportunity to explore a post-disaster world. With its release on multiple platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, gamers will have plenty of options to dive into this dark and intriguing adventure when it launches in 2025.
