Reborn: Ford RS200 Restomod Series with Official Support from Blue Oval

Ford RS200 to be Reborn as a Brit-Built Restomod

The Ford RS200, a legendary car from the 1980s, is set to make a comeback as part of a series of restomods with the official backing of Ford. Boreham Motorworks, a company under the DRVN Automotive Group based in London, has entered into a licensing agreement with Ford to produce and remaster some of the carmaker’s most iconic historic models. The first of these remastered cars will be a new version of the RS200, which will be revealed later this year to celebrate the model’s 40th anniversary.

Unlike other restomods that use components from existing cars, Boreham’s take on the RS200 will be built entirely from scratch in Coventry. The aim is to create an “entirely new” creation that closely matches the silhouette and mechanical makeup of the original RS200. However, from the preview image, it is clear that Boreham will incorporate modern elements into the design, such as LED lights, giving the car a modern touch.

While Boreham plans to modernize and upgrade certain aspects of the RS200, it is committed to maintaining the defining attributes of the original car, including its mid-mounted engine, composite bodywork, and four-wheel drive system. The company wants to offer a “peak analogue driving experience,” staying true to the raw and bare-bones nature of the Group B rallying legend.

In addition to the remastered cars, Boreham has been granted permission by Ford to build continuation versions of some of Ford’s most revered historic models. These continuation models will be made to the same technical specifications as the original cars and will even have period-correct VIN numbers. The first model in this series will be the MK2 Escort, with more models to follow in the future.

While Boreham has not disclosed how many of each model it will produce, it has stated that they will be sold in “very limited numbers.” Potential candidates for revival could include the Capri, GT40, Sierra Cosworth, and XR2i. Ford is excited about this partnership, as it believes Boreham Motorworks has an exciting vision for bringing iconic historical nameplates to life for the modern era.

It is worth noting that Boreham’s RS200 is being previewed at the same time that Welsh firm MST is working on its own modern-spec reworking of the MG Metro 6R4, one of the RS200’s main rivals in its heyday.

Overall, the revival of the Ford RS200 as a restomod with official backing from Ford is an exciting development for car enthusiasts. Boreham Motorworks’ commitment to maintaining the essence of the original car while incorporating modern elements ensures that fans of the RS200 can look forward to a thrilling driving experience. With the continuation models also in the works, classic Ford enthusiasts have much to anticipate in the coming years.
