REI Camp Mug Review: A Comparison to Yeti and MiiR Mugs for Heat Retention and Price

The REI Camp Mug is a versatile and affordable option for coffee lovers on the go. For the writer, their morning coffee routine had been limited to a cheap enamel mug, a MiiR Camp Mug, or a Yeti Rambler 14oz mug. The REI Camp Mug, priced at $22.99 MSRP, caught their attention due to its similarities with the MiiR and Yeti mugs, which are both known for their heat retention capabilities.

To test the heat retention of each mug, the writer filled them with hot water at 194 degrees and sealed them with their respective lids. After 30 minutes, the water in the Yeti mug measured 171 degrees, the MiiR mug measured 173 degrees, and the REI Camp Mug measured 156 degrees. While the REI mug was cooler than the others, it was still hot enough for optimal coffee flavor. After an hour, the temperatures were Yeti 160, MiiR 161, and REI 137. By the 90-minute mark, the temperatures were Yeti 150, MiiR 151, and REI 122. It should be noted that by then, most coffee drinkers would have consumed their first cup and moved on to another.

One of the drawbacks of insulated mugs, including enamel mugs, is the lack of warmth they provide to the hands. Ceramic mugs are known for their cozy warmth, which is not replicated in insulated mugs. While the MiiR and Yeti mugs retain heat efficiently due to their double-wall vacuum insulation, the REI Camp Mug allows some heat to escape, resulting in a quicker cool-down. However, this feature can be beneficial in adding comfort on chilly mornings while camping.

Another distinguishing factor among these mugs is the lid design. The Yeti mug comes with a Magslider lid that can be closed to retain heat and prevent spills. It is also easy to clean as the magnetic slider can be removed and placed in the dishwasher. The MiiR mug has a sliding mechanism as well, but it is not as easily removable as the Yeti’s. Both lids effectively prevent spills. On the other hand, the REI mug has a basic lid that does not offer spill prevention like the others. The writer personally did not find the lids necessary since they tend to keep the drink too hot for their liking.

Price and mug care are additional factors to consider. The REI mug is priced at $22.99 MSRP, followed by the MiiR at $27.95, and the Yeti at $30. However, the REI mug can often be found on sale, making it a more affordable option, such as the current clearance price of $15.93. In terms of washing, REI recommends hand washing the mug, which may be disappointing for some. It is important to note that like most double-wall vacuum insulated mugs, the REI mug is not microwave safe.

In conclusion, the REI Camp Mug offers a cost-effective alternative to the MiiR and Yeti mugs. While its heat retention may not be as effective as the others, it still keeps the coffee hot enough for optimal flavor. The mug’s ability to release some heat adds comfort for chilly mornings while camping. The lid design may not suit everyone’s needs, but the writer found it unnecessary for their personal use. With its affordable price point and occasional sales, the REI mug presents a compelling option for coffee enthusiasts who value both quality and value.
