Reimagining the Legendary Ford Sierra RS500: The Carbon Piranha Project

Reimagined Ford Sierra RS500: The Carbon Piranha

A group of British automotive firms has joined forces to bring back the iconic Ford Sierra RS500. The legendary 1980s super-saloon is being reborn as the Carbon Piranha, a carbonfibre-bodied technological marvel weighing less than a tonne. This project, known as Vision148, aims to showcase cutting-edge manufacturing and materials technology.

Chassis #148 of the original 500 Sierra RS500s will serve as the foundation for the Carbon Piranha. Although the condition of the chassis is unknown, the project’s website displays it covered in dust and missing some parts, indicating that it hasn’t been on the road in a while. The goal is to recycle, reimagine, and rebuild the car into an outlandish show car that draws inspiration from classic touring cars while giving it a modern touch.

To achieve this vision, ASM Auto Recycling will disassemble the car and use 3D scanning technology to create a digital twin of every panel and component. This digital twin will then serve as the template for a new carbonfibre body shell, designed by Yasid Design. The final construction of the car will be carried out by the Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC), known for supplying lightweight, high-strength components to the aerospace, high-end automotive, and motorsport industries. Their additive manufacturing and prototyping methods will play a crucial role in achieving the target weight of less than 1000kg, a significant reduction from the original steel-bodied car.

Cosworth, the original engine supplier, will take the lead in rebuilding the RS500’s 224bhp 2.0-litre turbo four engine. While there is no information yet regarding any performance upgrades, Cosworth’s global director, Nick Greenway, expressed excitement about the project. He highlighted Cosworth’s long-standing motorsport heritage and the passionate fan base for the Cosworth brand.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the project, the creators of Vision148 have not provided a specific timeline for its completion. However, it is clear that this reimagined Ford Sierra RS500, the Carbon Piranha, will be a remarkable fusion of retro design and cutting-edge technology.

In conclusion, the rebirth of the Ford Sierra RS500 as the Carbon Piranha is an exciting venture that brings together British automotive firms to create a technologically advanced and visually stunning show car. With its carbonfibre body, potential performance upgrades, and the expertise of companies like Yasid Design, ASM Auto Recycling, and DMC, the Carbon Piranha is set to make a bold statement in the automotive world. Stay tuned for updates on this project as it progresses towards completion.
