Renault Group Boss Rejects Rumors of Selling Alpine Formula 1 Team

Renault Group boss Luca de Meo has vehemently denied any plans to sell the Alpine Formula 1 team, despite their current struggles. In an exclusive interview with Autocar, de Meo stated that there is no way they are giving up and that selling any part of the team would be “stupid.” He acknowledged the team’s difficulties, including recent staff changes, and suggested that there may be more changes to come. De Meo believes that the root of the problem began several years ago with the engine’s performance during the hybrid era. He admitted that they have screwed up with the car this year, leading to their current position in the constructors’ championship. However, he remains hopeful for the team’s recovery plan and emphasized his expectations for a much better performance from Alpine.

De Meo also addressed the sale of 24% of Alpine’s Enstone facility to Redwing Capital Partners, an American group. He clarified that the deal was not an indication of selling part of the core team but a move to gain expertise from the group in developing sports franchises. He assured that there are no constraints on investment at Alpine’s technical centers in the UK and France, stating that he has never said no to investment but that it needs to come with good ideas.

De Meo outlined his belief that winning in F1 involves three elements: a quality team of top-notch people, racing rage and an obsession to win, and collaboration and trust throughout the team. He sees Alpine as having the backing of the Renault Group and believes they should aim to be one of the top teams in F1. While acknowledging mistakes, de Meo is committed to putting F1 at the core of Alpine and maximizing the brand’s potential.
