Revitalizing Overwatch Esports: A Look Back at the Overwatch Champions Series Major at DreamHack Dallas 2024

blankRevitalizing Overwatch Esports: The Open Ecosystem

Blizzard has taken steps to revitalize Overwatch’s competitive esports scene by introducing the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS). This new structure, which replaced the Overwatch League, offers an open format with both online and in-person events. The first two stages of the event and the summer Major have already taken place, sparking excitement and nostalgia for those who attended the Major at DreamHack Dallas in 2024.

At DreamHack Dallas, I had the opportunity to speak with Bailey McCann, OWCS product lead, and Sean Miller, head of Overwatch esports, as well as several Overwatch 2 voice actors. McCann explained that the new open ecosystem aligns with Blizzard’s original vision for Overwatch esports: an open, accessible, and authentic experience that serves the community. Miller highlighted Blizzard’s collaboration with FaceIt on creator tournaments and their efforts to integrate OWCS into the esports scene, stating that they aimed to keep it at a tier one level that every player can aspire to.

McCann emphasized the importance of creating a community feel that is authentic and serves the esports community, and being at DreamHack accomplished that goal. DreamHack provided the perfect platform to showcase Overwatch and its beloved heroes to a wider audience, fulfilling Blizzard’s vision.

Overwatch 2 at DreamHack Dallas: A Wholesome Experience

DreamHack Dallas not only showcased Overwatch but also provided an opportunity to connect with the actors behind the game’s characters. I spoke with Anjali Bhimani (Symmetra), Carolina Ravassa (Sombra), and Valeria Rodriguez (Venture) about their experiences at DreamHack. They all shared a common sentiment: DreamHack and the esports side of the event seamlessly blended with other areas, such as the indie developer showcase, artists alley, TTRPGs, and tabletop card gaming space.

Bhimani praised DreamHack for constantly expanding and making the attendees’ experience more inclusive. The event’s growth goes beyond just the size of the audience or convention; it focuses on providing opportunities for casual gamers, people with different interests, various vendors, and charities. This dynamic environment allows DreamHack to evolve and offer something new each time.

Rodriguez expressed gratitude for the esports scene, as it allows their characters to live on through the players. The continuous presence of these characters in tournaments creates a lasting legacy. Ravassa added that they get to grow alongside the characters and witness the evolution of the gamer community. The changes and reworks keep the experience fresh and exciting, fostering a sense of growth and belonging.

Conclusion

Blizzard’s introduction of the OWCS and its partnership with DreamHack have breathed new life into Overwatch’s competitive esports scene. The open ecosystem and focus on community have made the game more accessible and authentic. DreamHack Dallas serves as a prime example of how the esports side of the event seamlessly blends with other areas, creating a diverse and inclusive experience for attendees. The voice actors’ connection with the esports scene allows their characters to leave a lasting legacy and grow alongside the community. With Blizzard’s continued efforts and collaborations, Overwatch’s esports future looks bright.
