“Road Tester’s Review: Evaluating the New BMW 5 Series’ Performance, Design, and Comfort”

The BMW 5 Series has always been highly regarded at Autocar for its versatility and performance. The outgoing G30 model was particularly impressive, offering a range of options from fuel-efficient diesel engines to powerful performance variants like the M5 CS. Now, the eighth-generation G60 5 Series enters a world that is less focused on traditional saloons and more interested in cutting-edge technology and standout design.

The G60 range consists of two plug-in hybrids, two electric i5s, and the entry-level 520i mild-hybrid petrol. The UK market offers three main trims: M Sport, M Sport Pro, and M Performance. The M Sport Pro and M Performance trims come with additional exterior styling elements and extra features. The range-topping i5 M60 is equipped with a powerful 593bhp engine.

The G60’s design has received mixed reviews, with some questioning its departure from the traditional elegance associated with the 5 Series. However, BMW has never been afraid to challenge convention, as seen in previous generations like the E39 and E60. The G60 takes inspiration from the BMW iX SUV, featuring a pinched face and a leering grille. While not instantly lovable, the G60’s sloping boot pays homage to the classic E12 5 Series.

The G60 is the largest 5 Series to date, with a wheelbase that has grown by 24mm. The weight has also increased due to the addition of a 48V mild-hybrid system. However, the flexible CLAR platform ensures that the mechanical make-up of the 5 Series remains unchanged. The suspension consists of aluminum components and electronically controlled dampers. M Sport trim offers firmer springs and dampers, while EV and PHEV models come with self-levelling air springs at the rear.

The engine lineup for the G60 is less diverse than before, with diesel options no longer available in the UK. The 550e xDrive, featured in the review, is equipped with a 3.0-litre B58 six-cylinder petrol engine and a powerful electric motor, resulting in a total output of 483bhp. The 530e plug-in hybrid offers a blend of electric and petrol power, while the i5 models provide all-electric driving options.

The interior of the G60 has undergone significant changes, following the trend of touch-sensitive screen-based controls and high-resolution displays seen in other BMW models. The infotainment system is angled towards the driver, and the rotary iDrive controller remains, although it now features a cut glass design. However, reviewers have noted that the system can be slow and distracting to use while driving. The overall build quality remains high, but there is an overuse of gloss black materials and uninspiring plastics.

In terms of performance, the G60 550e xDrive impresses with its speed and power. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds, making it quicker than previous M5 models. The combination of electric and combustion power provides a seamless driving experience, with impressive torque and responsive acceleration. The 530e plug-in hybrid also offers good everyday performance, utilizing its electric power cleverly to augment the petrol engine.

The G60’s handling and ride comfort have received positive reviews. The Adaptive Suspension Professional, available on the 550e xDrive, provides excellent refinement and isolation. The chassis remains composed even on challenging roads, with precise steering and good body control. However, reviewers have noted that the G60 feels larger than previous models and lacks some of the agility and charm that defined the 5 Series in the past.

In terms of running costs, the G60 plug-in hybrids offer exceptional efficiency, with high MPG ratings and low emissions. The 530e achieved an impressive 60 miles in electric mode, while the 550e provided good touring economy. The G60 is generally slightly cheaper than its main rival, the Mercedes E-Class.

Overall, the G60 5 Series offers a blend of versatility, performance, and advanced technology. The plug-in hybrid models provide excellent fuel efficiency and electric driving range, making them attractive options for company car drivers. However, some enthusiasts may feel that the G60 has lost some of the beloved characteristics that defined the 5 Series in previous generations.
