“Road Tester’s Review: The BMW 5 Series G60 – A Fine Plug-in Hybrid Sports Saloon”

The BMW 5 Series has always been highly regarded at Autocar, thanks to its ability to excel in multiple areas. This executive saloon not only offers a comfortable and luxurious ride, but also delivers an engaging driving experience and practicality. The outgoing model, codenamed G30, was particularly impressive, offering a range of engines that provided both excellent fuel efficiency and high-performance options. The top-of-the-line M5 CS even challenged supercars like the Ferrari Purosangue.

Now, the eighth-generation 5 Series, known as the G60, enters a new era where traditional saloons are less popular, and hybrid powertrains and advanced interior technology are becoming increasingly important. The G60 faces new challenges in terms of design, size, and overall substance. Despite its larger dimensions, the G60 maintains the same footprint as the previous generation while offering a more spacious cabin. However, the increased weight and size can make it feel less nimble on tight roads.

The G60 range consists of two plug-in hybrids, two electric i5s, and the entry-level 520i mild-hybrid petrol. The range is divided into three trims: M Sport, M Sport Pro, and M Performance. The M Sport Pro and M Performance trims come with additional exterior styling elements and extra features.

In terms of design, the G60 takes inspiration from the BMW iX SUV, featuring a bold front grille that may divide opinions. While the design may not be instantly lovable, it pays homage to previous iconic 5 Series models and maintains the elegant aesthetic associated with the brand.

Inside, the cabin has undergone a significant transformation. The G60 introduces BMW’s latest iDrive Operating System 8.5 infotainment system, which integrates various controls and functions into high-resolution displays. However, there is also a reliance on touch-sensitive controls, which may be frustrating for some users. The build quality remains high, but there is an overuse of glossy black surfaces and uninspiring plastics.

When it comes to performance, the 550e xDrive stands out with its powerful six-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain. It offers impressive acceleration and delivers a refined and composed ride. The 530e plug-in hybrid provides everyday performance and cleverly utilizes its electric power to enhance the driving experience. However, there are no longer diesel or unelectrified six-cylinder options available.

In terms of handling, the G60 maintains the 5 Series’ reputation for composure and balance. The Adaptive Suspension Professional, available on certain trims, offers excellent refinement and isolation, providing a comfortable ride even on rough roads. However, the larger size of the G60 can make it feel less agile compared to previous generations.

In terms of running costs, the plug-in hybrid models offer exceptional efficiency, making them attractive choices for company car drivers. The 530e achieved an impressive electric range of 60 miles, while the 550e delivered a respectable 40.1mpg.

Overall, the G60 5 Series presents a mixed bag of improvements and compromises. While it offers impressive performance, efficiency, and comfort, some may find the design less appealing and the interior tech less intuitive. The G60 has evolved into a larger and more capable saloon, but it may have lost some of the charm and character that made the 5 Series so beloved in the past.
