Samsung and Google Collaborate on XR Headset, Threatening Apple Vision Pro

Samsung and Google are teaming up to develop an XR (extended reality) headset that could potentially rival Apple’s Vision Pro. This collaboration between the two tech giants was announced by Google SVP of Platforms and Services, Rick Osterloh, at Samsung’s Unpacked event. Osterloh appeared on stage to emphasize Google’s commitment to bringing AI-powered capabilities, specifically through Google Gemini, to Samsung phones and Android devices. Gemini is integrated into the operating systems of the newly unveiled Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

However, Google’s collaboration with Samsung goes beyond just software integration. Osterloh revealed that they are working closely with Samsung to develop a new XR platform. Qualcomm, a leading chipset maker, is also part of this collaboration. Qualcomm is already working with Samsung to equip its Galaxy devices with chipsets, and they have experience with XR devices like the Meta Quest 3, which runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 processor.

Samsung President TM Roh further emphasized this collaboration by stating that the mixed-reality device resulting from their efforts will be released later this year. This timeline is earlier than expected, indicating that progress is being made rapidly.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Samsung and Google’s XR collaboration. During last year’s Samsung Unpacked event in February 2023, Google and Qualcomm executives revealed their plans for XR technology. Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon expressed their goal of creating highly immersive digital experiences that blur the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds.

XR, which encompasses technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), integrates digital elements into the real world. The Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3 are examples of XR devices, offering both AR and VR capabilities. AR allows users to interact with virtual elements while still perceiving their real-life surroundings, while VR provides complete immersion in a simulated environment.

Details about Samsung and Google’s XR project are limited, but rumors suggest that they are working on a headset called Samsung Flex Magic, which aims to compete with the Apple Vision Pro. Leaker @TheGalox_alt on Twitter has shared this information, although it should be taken with a grain of salt until official announcements are made.

Overall, the collaboration between Samsung and Google in the XR space indicates their commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and offering users innovative and immersive experiences. As we eagerly await further details about their upcoming XR product, it remains to be seen whether Samsung and Google can successfully challenge Apple’s dominance in this market segment.
