“Seat Leon Gets Upgraded Powertrains and Interior Technologies”

Seat has announced updates to its Leon model, including improvements to its powertrains and interior technologies. The entry-level 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine has been replaced with a more powerful 1.5-litre turbo unit, delivering 114bhp and 162lb ft of torque. This upgrade not only provides more power but also increases fuel efficiency, with an extra 1.9mpg compared to the previous engine. The new engine achieves an official fuel economy figure of 53.3mpg.

In addition to the petrol engines, Seat has also made changes to its plug-in hybrid offering. The previous 1.4-litre PHEV has been dropped from the line-up and replaced with a new PHEV option that combines the 1.5-litre engine with an electric motor and a 19.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This results in a combined output of 201bhp and 258lb ft of torque, as well as an electric-only range of over 62 miles.

Inside the Leon, significant upgrades have been made to the on-board technologies. The car now features a 10.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, similar to the ones found in the revised Volkswagen Golf and Skoda Octavia. There is also an optional larger 12.9-inch display available. One notable improvement is the illuminated temperature control slider, which addresses a previous criticism of the interior’s usability.

Seat has also enhanced the wireless smartphone charging pad in the Leon. The new pad can deliver up to 15W of power and is refrigerated to keep the phone’s battery cool, resulting in improved charging performance.

Furthermore, the Leon now offers the option of matrix LED headlights for the first time, enhancing visibility and safety while driving at night.

The production of the updated Leon will begin soon, and it is expected that prices will slightly increase compared to the outgoing model. Currently, the Leon hatchback starts at £23,905, while the estate version is priced from £25,340.

These updates to the Leon come as Seat refreshes several of its key models, including the Arona crossover and Ibiza supermini. The brand is investing in these updates as part of a larger effort to reinvigorate the brand after the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Seat’s CEO, Wayne Griffiths, recently confirmed that the company plans to launch an electric car priced at €20,000 (£17,000). However, he noted that it is not an immediate priority for the brand, as it would not be profitable if launched today.
