Should You Upgrade to Google’s Pixel Watch 3? A Comparison with the Pixel Watch 2

Pixel Watch 3 vs. Pixel Watch 2: Is the Upgrade Worth it?

When it comes to deciding whether to upgrade from the Pixel Watch 2 to the Pixel Watch 3, there are several factors to consider. Let’s break down the differences between the two models to help you make an informed decision.

Price Comparison:

The Pixel Watch 3 comes in two sizes: 41mm and 45mm. The 41mm version starts at $349.99 for the Wi-Fi model and $449.99 for LTE connectivity. If you prefer the larger 45mm size, it starts at $399.99 for Wi-Fi and $499.99 for LTE. On the other hand, the Pixel Watch 2 has the same starting price as the Pixel Watch 3 at $349, but it only comes in a 41mm case size.

Design and Display:

The design of the Pixel Watch 3 continues Google’s signature round design language. However, the Pixel Watch 3 now has a larger 45mm size. Additionally, the bezels on the Pixel Watch 3 are over 16% smaller compared to the Pixel Watch 2, providing more screen real estate. The Pixel Watch 3 also offers a brighter display, with double the luminance of its predecessor. It can reach up to 2,000 nits of brightness, making it easier to see outdoors, and can drop down to one nit for darker environments.

Battery Life:

While we would need to test the battery life of both watches to know for sure, Google claims that the Pixel Watch 3 has the same battery life rating as the Pixel Watch 2. It offers 24 hours of battery life with an always-on display and up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode. However, the Pixel Watch 3 charges 20% faster than its predecessor, specifically the 41mm model.

Health and Fitness:

In terms of health and fitness features, the Pixel Watch 3 has the same sensors as the Pixel Watch 2. These include a compass, altimeter, SpO2 monitoring, multipurpose electrical sensors, heart-rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, and skin temperature sensor. However, Google has made advancements in the software with AI, introducing new running capabilities, media controls during workouts, AI-powered form-tracking, and a running dashboard in the Fitbit app. With Fitbit Premium, the Pixel Watch 3 offers personalized workout recommendations, form improvement tips, and daily health and fitness metrics.

Google Ecosystem Integration:

The Pixel Watch 3 benefits from being part of the Google ecosystem. It allows you to access Google Maps, use Wallet for payments, communicate with couriers via Google Nest Cam, control Google TV, and more. Google AI can even handle calls for you and trigger the camera shutter on your Pixel phone.

Is it Worth the Upgrade?

If you currently own an older Pixel Watch and desire a larger screen, the Pixel Watch 3 is definitely worth considering. The increased screen size and smaller bezels offer a more immersive experience. The brighter display also enhances visibility in different lighting conditions. However, if you are hoping for significant improvements in battery life or new health-tracking features, you may want to wait for the Pixel Watch 4. Ultimately, the decision to upgrade depends on your specific needs and priorities.
