“Smart Unveils the #5: A Spacious Electric SUV Set to Rival Mini Countryman and BMW X1”

Smart, the electric vehicle brand, has announced that it will be revealing its largest and most spacious model to date, the Smart #5 SUV, at the 2024 Beijing motor show. This new model, which is described as moving “far beyond the urban boundaries” of previous Smart models, will be unveiled in concept form before going into production in China later this year and hitting the UK market in 2025. The Smart #5 SUV is the third model to be jointly developed by Geely and Mercedes-Benz, who are the majority shareholders of Smart. It will join the recently introduced Smart #1 and Smart #3 models, with a fourth model, a successor to the two-seat ForTwo called the #2, planned for 2025.

The Smart #5 SUV is designed to directly compete with popular models like the Mini Countryman, BMW X1, and Volvo XC40. It will have a more upright shape compared to the #1 and #3 models, featuring a bluff front end, cladded wheel arches, long rear doors, and a near-vertical tailgate with a wraparound light bar. The focus of the design is to maximize interior space by minimizing overhangs.

In addition to its spacious interior, the Smart #5 SUV will also have some rugged styling elements. Sketches of the concept version reveal off-road touches such as a roof-mounted storage compartment with LED lights, a shovel, inflatable chairs, and even a snowboard. The SUV will be based on the same platform as the #1 and #3 models, which is known as the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) and is developed by Sweden-based China Euro Vehicle Technology (CEVT) and Geely.

One notable development expected to feature in the Smart #5 SUV is an 800-volt electric architecture. This is a significant upgrade from the previous 400-volt system used in all electric-powered Smart models. The SUV is also expected to offer the choice between single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor four-wheel drive, as well as different battery options with varying energy content.

Similar to its smaller siblings, the Smart #5 SUV will offer buyers the choice between standard models and more powerful Brabus-enhanced performance models. The latter will be aimed at challenging the Mini Countryman John Cooper Works, a high-performance version of the popular Mini crossover.

The introduction of the Smart #5 SUV demonstrates Smart’s commitment to expanding its offerings beyond compact city cars. With its larger size, spacious interior, and rugged styling touches, the SUV is poised to attract a wider range of customers who are looking for a practical and versatile electric vehicle. As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, Smart’s expansion into different segments reflects the brand’s desire to stay competitive and meet the evolving needs of consumers.

Overall, the Smart #5 SUV represents an exciting step forward for the brand and showcases the potential for electric vehicles to excel in various market segments. With its combination of size, style, and advanced electric technology, the Smart #5 SUV has the potential to make a significant impact in the SUV market when it arrives in 2025.
