Spotify Users on iPhone Lose Ability to Control Volume via Physical Buttons: Apple Discontinues Technology

## Spotify Users on iPhone Face Volume Control Issues

Spotify users who stream music and podcasts on their iPhones via Spotify Connect are experiencing difficulties controlling the volume on their audio devices. According to Spotify, Apple has “discontinued” the technology that allowed users to adjust the volume using the physical iPhone buttons when streaming to speakers, smart TVs, gaming consoles, and other devices. This change has prompted Spotify to notify its users that they will need to use the volume slider within the Spotify app to control the volume. While the official rollout of this change is scheduled for September 3, some users are already receiving the notification when attempting to adjust the volume.

## The Feud Between Spotify and Apple Continues

Spotify’s latest update makes it clear that Apple is responsible for making things more challenging for iPhone users. Spotify claims that Apple has discontinued the technology that enables the app to control the volume of connected devices using the physical volume buttons on the iPhone. While Spotify works with Apple to find a solution, users are advised to use the Spotify app to adjust the volume on their connected devices.

Apple’s changes have not only affected volume control but have also resulted in random volume spikes and other bugs for Spotify users. The Sonos app faced similar issues earlier this year and also made changes to address them. Spotify has requested that Apple introduce a solution similar to what they offer for HomePod and Apple TV, allowing app developers to control non-Apple media devices. However, Apple has stated that apps need to integrate into HomePod to access the technology that controls volume on iPhones.

## A Larger Ongoing Feud

While the volume control issue may seem minor, it is just one more problem in the ongoing feud between Spotify and Apple. Earlier this year, Spotify filed a complaint against Apple in the EU, resulting in a $2 billion fine for Apple. The complaint accused Apple of prohibiting app makers from redirecting users outside of the official App Store to sign up for subscription services. In response, Apple criticized Spotify for using its tools to run the iPhone app without paying the company. Apple highlighted that it collaborates with Spotify to ensure compatibility with Siri, CarPlay, Apple Watch, AirPlay, Widgets, and more. However, it appears that volume control via the iPhone’s physical buttons is no longer included in that list.

This ongoing feud between Spotify and Apple illustrates the complex dynamics between tech giants in the industry. While it may seem like a minor issue, it sheds light on the larger power struggles and competition for dominance in the digital music streaming market. Both companies have a vested interest in controlling the user experience and maintaining their market share. As this conflict continues, it remains to be seen how these industry behemoths will resolve their differences and whether it will impact users’ music streaming experience in the long run.
