Stellantis Considers Adding Gasoline Engines to Electric Models as Market Demand Shifts

Stellantis, the multinational automotive corporation, is navigating the changing landscape of electric vehicles (EVs) by considering various options to meet market demand and adhere to government regulations. The company’s chief financial officer, Natalie Knight, revealed during a presentation of Stellantis’ first-quarter shipment and revenues results that they are open to the idea of incorporating gasoline engines in their electric models. Knight used the example of the Jeep Wagoneer S, which will initially launch with an electric powertrain but may introduce a gasoline-powered variant in the future.

The decision to introduce a gasoline engine in an electric model hinges on whether there is a clear demand for it in the market. Stellantis understands the importance of staying close to consumers and will carefully evaluate opportunities to hybridize models that were initially introduced as battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Antonio Filosa, the new CEO of Jeep, shared a similar sentiment, suggesting that while hybridizing the Wagoneer S may not be on the cards, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the all-electric Recon could be explored.

Stellantis has ambitious plans to launch 25 new models globally in 2024, with 18 of them featuring electric powertrains. However, this does not mean that these models will remain electric-only throughout their production run. The advantage that Stellantis holds is its ability to easily develop gasoline-powered versions of EVs due to its multi-energy platform. This platform allows brands like Dodge, Jeep, and Peugeot (all under the Stellantis umbrella) to offer both electric and gasoline options for their vehicles.

For example, the forthcoming Dodge Charger is set to initially launch with an electric drivetrain but will expand its range by introducing a 3.0-liter straight-six engine in 2025. Similarly, the Jeep Avenger, although initially marketed as an all-electric model when it debuted in 2023, quietly gained a gasoline-electric hybrid option in early 2024. The Peugeot 208 also offers customers the choice between piston or battery power.

Another potential candidate for integration of a gasoline engine into an electric model is the Fiat 500e. While the retro-styled hatchback has only been available as an EV since its European release in 2020, executives are reportedly considering hybridizing it due to slow sales.

Stellantis, like its competitors, is recognizing the growing importance of plug-in hybrid models. According to Wards Auto, the top three best-selling PHEV models in the United States are all Stellantis vehicles: the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Dodge Hornet. This shift towards plug-in hybrids showcases Stellantis’ commitment to the EV market while maintaining the flexibility to adapt and cater to consumer preferences.
