Subway Surfers, the popular mobile game, is going retro to celebrate its 12th anniversary. Sybo, the game’s developer, has announced the launch of Subway Surfers Classic for a limited time starting on May 13. This version of the game will transport players back to the original design from 2012, giving them a chance to experience the nostalgia that made the game a global hit.
Subway Surfers has been downloaded more than four billion times, making it the most downloaded game of all time. With Subway Surfers Classic, Sybo aims to celebrate the game’s role in shaping pop culture and bring players back to where it all began. The retro edition will be available to both old and new fans until June 2, 2024.
In addition to the classic design, Subway Surfers Classic will introduce a new suite of playable characters that pay homage to the game’s history and community. One of these characters is Hammy-Bee, the winner of Sybo’s Craft-A-Character Competition. Created by Sarah Bucksey, an animation student at Arts University Bournemouth, Hammy-Bee was selected out of over 700 submissions.
Other characters include Pixel Jake, inspired by the game’s original art style, Guard King, a favorite of Subway Surfers’ social media community, and Ballerina Tricky, a beloved character from Subway Surfers: The Animated Series. These new characters add depth and variety to the gameplay experience for fans.
To further enhance the player experience, Subway Surfers will also launch Player Profiles for the first time. This highly requested feature will allow players to easily track and share their progress with others. Sybo has noticed that Subway Surfers’ fanbase has been sharing their top runs on social media for years, so they have decided to provide players with the ability to access and customize a shareable overview of their progress directly in-game.
In line with the anniversary celebration, Sybo is also partnering with popular filter creators on TikTok and Instagram to launch a suite of 12 new filters. These filters will allow fans to create their own retro-themed Subway Surfers content and share it with their followers. This collaboration aims to cater to Subway Surfers’ highly engaged audience of over 24 million cross-platform social media followers.
Subway Surfers Classic is available for download on iOS, Android, and other platforms. The game is free to play with in-app purchases. Sybo, the developer of Subway Surfers, was founded in 2010 and was acquired by Miniclip in July 2022.
Overall, the launch of Subway Surfers Classic not only celebrates the game’s 12th anniversary but also gives players a chance to revisit its origins and enjoy a nostalgic experience. With new playable characters, Player Profiles, and social media collaborations, Sybo is ensuring that Subway Surfers remains a beloved and engaging game for its dedicated fanbase.
