“Tesla Cybertruck Gets New Off-Road Features in Software Update”

Introduction:
The Tesla Cybertruck has been the subject of much anticipation and speculation since its launch event. Tesla has now announced that it will be releasing another software update for the electric off-roader, which will enhance its off-road capabilities and introduce some exciting on-road features as well. This update follows a previous OTA package released in February.

Off-Road Features in the Update:
The new software update for the Tesla Cybertruck introduces an Off-Road driving mode with two settings: Overland and Baja. Lead engineer Wes Morrill explained the features of these modes in a series of posts on X. In Overland Mode, drivers can adjust various settings to optimize traction on different surfaces. These settings include choosing the terrain type (such as Rock or Sand), selecting whether to activate a brake holding feature, adjusting ride height, activating rear-wheel-steering, locking the differentials, and wading. Additionally, there are digital gauges that indicate the truck’s heading, pitch, and roll in degrees.

Locking Differentials:
Morrill clarifies that the locking differentials feature allows the Cybertruck to direct torque to the opposite wheel if one wheel has limited or no traction. This is similar to traction control or torque vectoring, but it is worth noting that the Cybertruck does not have solid axles. Nonetheless, this feature is expected to help the truck get unstuck in challenging off-road conditions. The dual-motor Cybertruck has front and rear locking e-differentials, while the tri-motor variant, known as the Cyberbeast, comes with a variable locking rear differential that is always active, along with an additional front e-differential.

Baja Mode:
The Baja Mode in the Tesla Cybertruck is described as being equivalent to track mode and is designed to enhance vehicle balance and handling when Stability Assist is set to Minimal. The mode offers a Rugged setting that is recommended for high-speed off-road driving. There is also a Handling Balance slider that allows the driver to choose which axle does the most work, providing greater control and customization for off-road enthusiasts.

Additional Features:
The software update for the Cybertruck also introduces Trail Assist, which functions as an off-road cruise control. Passengers can now swipe through surround-camera views on the Cybertruck’s off-road pages. Furthermore, a Cybertent Mode has been included, which keeps the tonneau cover open, levels the truck, and maintains power supply to bed lights and outlets for those using the $3,000 overlanding add-on.

On-Road Enhancements:
In addition to the off-road features, the Tesla Cybertruck update includes improvements for on-road performance. A selectable Slippery Surface terrain control engages the new rear electronic differential locker, providing better traction on slippery surfaces like ice and snow. However, Tesla advises that this feature should only be used temporarily, without specifying the recommended duration. The adaptive suspension has also been calibrated to better estimate the weight of the payload, resulting in a more comfortable ride. The Vitals page displays crucial data such as battery and motor temperatures and tire pressures.

Upcoming Updates:
While this software update brings several exciting additions to the Cybertruck, it seems that Tesla still has more in store. A 22-page Cybertruck Off-Road Guide offers further information on the new systems. Additionally, a report from Teslarati suggests that Tesla’s upcoming Spring Release software update could introduce even more features for the Cybertruck and other Tesla models.

Conclusion:
The new software update for the Tesla Cybertruck showcases the company’s continuous commitment to enhancing the capabilities and performance of its vehicles. With the introduction of off-road driving modes, locking differentials, advanced camera views, and additional on-road features, Tesla is catering to both outdoor enthusiasts and everyday drivers. As Tesla continues to innovate and release updates, it is clear that the Cybertruck will only become more formidable and versatile in the coming months.
